It sounds like a virus to me. Have you been on 4chan recently? That site seems to cause spontaneous caps lock on many people's keyboards.

What's 4chan?

You don't want to know. I think Yahoo Answers might be more your speed.

Tell us how the caps lock comes on. Have you ever been sitting at the keyboard, not touching it at all, and seen the caps lock key come on?

I would consider a virus to be a likely explanation if that was the case. Otherwise, the most likely explanation is that you're bumping the key without noticing (it is right beside shift, after all) or a mechanical fault in the keyboard (the connection could be being made just by the shaking of the keyboard as you hit other keys).

Rules 1 and 2 only apply to raids.

Maybe you could borrow a keyboard and see if it works better. I've had dozens of keyboards, almost all are in some sense broken now but I've never seen that happen. So if the same thing happened on a different keyboard that would be a very strong sign of it being a software problem ... and given how basic keyboard input is, almost certainly a virus.

I've grown out of such things, but I used to pull pranks like that on friend's computers. You don't even have to go to some scary site and download a "virus", you can make their keyboard behave pretty strangely with just a few changes in the registry. Or just go to Control Panel and select DVORAK keyboard.
