We prefer a more precise term - Americans.

If you want to continually stress the very important point that the Americas are continents, because those of us with an education that went beyond 5th grade really need to be reminded, at the very LEAST the term should be "USers". "United Staters" sounds better than "United Statesians". Or how about "USites"?

Exactly. It sounds a bit retarded, but I realy don't mind whether "American" or "USian" is used. However, there are the United States of Mexico, so calling us Americans USians would get confusing. In Spanish, we're called Estadosunidensos, which works. There's nothing in English that matches that, and several people from South America get pissed off if you say you're American and they aren't, because they see America as North and South America, as in the Americas.
