Bluesky is open to public registration now, I believe.

According to https://bsky.social/about/blog/02-06-2024-join-bluesky, Bluesky is really open to public registration. Elon Musk now has a new competitor that anyone can join, but it is important for Bluesky to not repeat the mistakes of Twitter/X under Elon Musk.

I can't say I like Bluesky's chances of taking off.

The problem is that Twitter already has a lot of public inertia behind it. Getting people to switch from one service to another, especially one that's just starting out, is absurdly difficult. The only example I can think of is the migration from myspace to facebook. Twitter is going to really need to shit the bed before people move, and even then it's going to be to something big like Threads or something else with a big name behind it. People aren't going to move en masse to one of these startup twitter competitors, I just can't see that happening, they have no reason to.

I've no idea about the chances for it, but it'd be a long slow process either way.

Should be ok. I like the interface.

TwitterX is mainly surviving due to grandfathering. It’s not enough to carry it in the social media world anymore…….

I think BlueSky really shot itself in the foot by starting out as being locked behind invite codes. Now when it finally opens to the public, it won't be a big debut. Because it instead began with a trickle debut of "invite only."

People will think of BlueSky and go "didn't that thing already come out a while ago?"

If they think about BlueSky at all. I know my experience isn't universal or anything, but I consider myself at least mildly in the know (at least as much as your average netizen), and if it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't have a single clue what BlueSky or Mastodon or any of the other possible replacements even are. They just don't have the real estate in the public consciousness that Twitter does. Twitter, as far as I can see it, needs to go offline before people will move to something else.

I wonder how viable it would be to mandate that social media services carry cross-compatible API to avoid monopolisation.

Maybe it's a good thing that Bluesky isn't trying to be Twitter 2.0. Let it be a smaller thing with slower growth.

Despite Jack's previous plans for it, it's going to be Twitter 2.0, everyone is treating it like it's Twitter 2.0, or at least the beta for Twitter 2.0 because it still needs DMs.

I could have sworn that one of the people behind Bluesky did come out as an Elon simp, so it may do down the same route as Twitter after all.

I think grandfathering is definitely what is slowing the decline of Twitter/X, but ultimately websites need money to survive: Twitter/X would have no chance staying within the two server space options that Neocities offers (one gigabyte for free users, and 50 gigabytes for paid users).

Exactly.

If someone hears about BlueSky they'll either go "what's that?" or they'll go "Isn't that the site that died because you needed an invite to join it?"

X took payments from terrorists

Musk let accounts associated with the Houthis and Hezbollah pay for his new blue checkmark, despite them being barred from operating in the US.

Musk continues to desperately beg for money. In the span of about a day Twitter introduced a new rule against misgendering people as a ploy to try to win back the "Wokies" that are leaving in droves. Elon's fanbase then revolted, shrieking that Elon went woke. Elon has no reversed the policy.

And in his continuing trend of poor privacy protections, the new calling function is on by default and can leak your IP address. So if you still have an account on that forsaken hellsite, might want to go turn that off.
