"In the past" don't play this, the Puritans and Quakers had average marriage ages in the mid-20s, the evangelical revival in the 19th and early 20th century took a page from the book of Mormon and indulged in this sick mess.

It's particularly bad in some states. Tennessee has some bad juju going on with its child marriage numbers. It's not exclusive to the evangelical community, but there's a lot of correlation.
