I'm against pointless taxes.

But on the other hand, the concept of sugary drinks completely baffles me. You cant even dissolve the amount of sugar a coke can has in 355ml of water. It is so unhealthy I have difficulties to understand why people tolerate its existence.

But hey, it's not the only thing that dosent make sense in this world.

Coke has its uses: there's permanently a can of it with my first aid kit, for example.

I totally agree with a tax on sugar drinks in order to promote a more healthy lifestyle.
It should be quite high to have effect, since sugar drinks are quite cheap: it should be fixed to at least 50%.

It would definitely help people with Hypoglycemia for example.

I'm a sailing instructor. A large percentage of the time, if I'm doing first aid on someone, they've swallowed gallons of lake or river water in addition to whatever else they've done. Coke is just about the strongest bacteria-killing substance that you can drink and not do serious damage to yourself.

Also helps if you've just fainted, and it's used for stomach blockages because its ingredients are good at dissolving stuff.

Wow, so much useful advice for coca cola in medical supplies, and here I was thinking I was crafty for knowing how to remove a bullet with a stick.

This sounded interesting so I looked it up.

Might want to opt for wine, olive oil or maybe even tea instead, though it could always depend on what you ingest. Lake or river water isn't restricted to pathogens you find in food, but given Coca Cola's apparent lack of bactericidal properties I'm not so sure. Maybe its effect on the stomach itself may help, but I'm not sure there's a direct effect.

Huh, interesting. I have it on good authority from the actual experts that it does work, but I might try some of those. I feel like giving wine to kids might be a tad harder to explain, though.

Well it's just one article so I wouldn't immediately take it as definite proof.

All of the suggestions are perfectly reasonable, as is the prospect of taxing sugar.

Obesity is a chronic epidemic, and the illnesses it produces are going to put enormous strains (pun intended) on healthcare systems around the world, especially in America.

The best thing we can do now is try to curb the issue before it gets completely out of control.

That would be the best way to do it. Help to encourage production of healthier foods and work on educating the next generation on good eating habits.

Frankly, changing what kids eat from an early age, especially in school, would be a great start. Obesity typically starts young.

Not really. Healthy food for a family of five where I live is roughly the same as an equivalent lot of fast food, sometimes more expensive.

I haven't actually been to the supermarket and checked recently, but I'm very skeptical.

Healthy food isn't just quinoa and gluten free oats y'know.

Good old cabbage, rye bread, spaghetti, peas and carrots etc. is dirt cheap.
