China wants to score all their citizens

Postby Imperial Union of America » Sun Oct 23, 2016 10:39 am

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/china-surveillance-big-data-score-censorship-a7375221.html

Imagine a world where an authoritarian government monitors everything you do, amasses huge amounts of data on almost every interaction you make, and awards you a single score that measures how “trustworthy” you are.

In this world, anything from defaulting on a loan to criticising the ruling party, from running a red light to failing to care for your parents properly, could cause you to lose points. And in this world, your score becomes the ultimate truth of who you are – determining whether you can borrow money, get your children into the best schools or travel abroad; whether you get a room in a fancy hotel, a seat in a top restaurant – or even just get a date.

Holy crap. This reminds me of "1984" by George orwell. I'm totally in favor of monitoring non white citizens with secret files, but rating everyone is a huge beaurocratic nightmare.

How do you feel about this system? Will it be practical or too expensive? Wil it even be effective?

A: It's '1984', not '1094'.
B: Yes, FAR too expensive. And holy shiiiit, this is terrifying.

Welcome to last December.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHcTKWiZ8sI

The point is that it's not like 1984 because it's not all central government. It's essentially a shame system.
Watch Black Mirror's new episode "Nosedive" which basically explores the same concept, albeit through the much more western lens of the approval we seek from others.

That's not better... even a bit. Heck, even worse than total monitiring, because the lattest at least won't create additional racial tensions. Yes, racial tensions, which may even lead to some riot.

How do you feel about this system? Will it be practical or too expensive? Wil it even be effective?

Why would they even need that total scoring stuff? People lived well-off for many centuries without it. And that system would waste useful money, create corruption, and damage international reputation. And increase crime... people, who "Failed" that test will just seek forbidden thingies in the black markets. Or use smugglers to get across the border.

Frankly, this is an expanded credit score. Sesame Credit, run by Alibaba already does this. If the government wants to deny certain people their services (many of these restrictions would probably be done through companies which are wholly owned by the state, or at least a controlling stake), I find no fault with that, the same way a bank shouldn't be forced to make loans.

Anti: Most types of representative democracy, ultra-nationalism, imperialism, autocratic workplace management, the state

It's just what every government on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain used to do, just now it's official.
Capitalism, single-payer healthcare, pro-choice, LGBT rights, progressive personal taxation, low corporate tax, pro-business law, welfare for those in need.
Nazism, edgism, dogmatic statements, most of Abrahamic-derived morality (esp. as law), welfare for those not in need.

It's kind of hard not to when your entire world view centers around the idea of racial struggle.

And it never occurred to you to maybe, I don't know, stop believing in white supremacist conspiracy theories and accept that maybe scientists actually know what they're talking about when they say that the concept of "race" has absolutely no biological basis? When the world doesn't conform to your ludicrous views, its a lot safer to question the merit of your views rather than concluding there's a global conspiracy to silence you.

I remember reading about this a while back, when they were still planning it out.

It's definitely immoral and will have some uncomfortable social ramifications, but it doesn't seem entirely implausible. China has its own NSA (called the 3PLA) and most websites in China are local and already have close ties to the government. It doesn't seem like a stretch for them to add up everything they already know about their citizens and publish it as a number. They won't be being watched any more than they are now, but they will be more aware that they are.

On the other hand, let me explain what a panopticon is so I can compare it to this. It's a type of jail built like a circle, with the middle part being one way glass, behind which the guards are. The prisoners aren't constantly being watched, but they might as well be, since they can't tell when they aren't being watched. This kind of jail has never been built, but I digress. The dissidents in china don't know what the government can see and what they can't, right now. But with this scoring system, they can test the government. If they use a proxy that brings their score down, they will know to use a different one. This could VERY easily backfire.
