We should care to not screw up again on such a monumental scale. This is an unwise decision, just as it would be an unwise decision to do it the house of Stalin. If we don't learn from history, if it isn't tangible or we attempt to memoryhole it, we will pay for it in the future.

I'd say to properly remember something you have to care about it to a certain extent. Most people do not care about the Napoleonic Wars or WWI or the Taiping Rebellion and thus their legacies are diluted among the masses. WWII will suffer the same fate wherein most people basically go "Oh yeah that thing that happened a long time ago, right? Yeah sorry, I don't know much about it. We learned it in high school and I forgot pretty much everything afterwards. Wanna see my new flying robopig?!"

Turn it into a Museum, completly with originally restored rooms, Gift, Beverage and Souvenir Shop alike.

And use the revenues for some educative and charity work. ;^)

More likely it's Austria trying to prove yet again that they had nothing to do with the Nazis and were in fact the first victim of Nazi aggression.

And yet imagine the furor if it were MLK jr's house, or Stalin's house, or Mandela's house. Got to love the hypocrisy of those here that are saying 'good riddance' to a piece of history, however odious it may seem to a fair number of people.

As some other poster already pointed out, it's not going to be torn down.

I agree it should be re-purposed though in a suitable way that would have meaning behind it, preferably to honour victims of Nazism or the like.

Even if they did tear it down, the land itself wouldn't go away nor what it's associated with. That spot is forever marred.

I don't have much of an issue with destroying a potential Nazi Mecca.

The gas station Mussolini was hung from, IIRC, was torn down for this same reason.

Correction: Educative and chairty work towards Jews, LQBTQ+ people, Roma, and the disabled. Then, we get a laugh and we make it clear that we don't support what Hitler has done.

I personally don't think that the fact that Hitler was born there makes it a historically significant enough site to warrent preservation, and love Neo-Nazi tears, so I'm pretty fine with it

Should've been turned into a museum dedicated to Nazi war crimes and the Holocaust.
