Board Gaming Discussion Thread

Postby Austria and Bavaria » Fri Sep 30, 2016 8:12 am

Hello all, I've noticed that there is no thread for the discussion of Board Gaming, I figured I may as well make one, since it's probably my favorite hobby. I'll include Card-Based Games and Tabletop Roleplaying Games here as well, since they are usually lumped in with Board Games. Feel free to discuss upcoming games, your favorite games, or strategies here.

I suppose I'd best get the ball rolling. My favorite Games are Twilight Struggle, the unfortunately named Virgin Queen, and A House Divided. Hoping to pick up Paths of Glory and Labyrinth sometime in the near future.

I'm interested in the lore, never really been able to get into the game itself, I've always seen it as cost-prohibitive. Plus I am terrible at painting.

I think Arts & Fiction is a more appropriate forum, but I am not a merciless technocrat moderator, so play on.

Meanwhile, as an Atari kid, the classic board games still figured prominently in my childhood.
I especially liked the ones with money like Monopoloy, Life, and Pay Day.

This seems like exactly my type of thread.
As far as favourites go, Catan and Carcassonne are high on the list. Recently picked up Kremlin as well, and the fact that a lot of it revolves around who can bluster the best is just fantastic. Haven't played quite enough to have a fully-formed opinion on it quite yet, but the couple games I did play were hella entertaining.

Oh, and Tak, 'cause I'm a complete and utter Rothfuss fangirl.

Carcassonne is probably my favorite low intensity game. It's great fun.

Ah Monopoly, leading cause of familial estrangement.

Actually, in my house a game of Risk could lead to an actual blood feud.

My friends I tried Cthulhu wars. Its pretty fun if not completely crazy at times when theirs a four way war on a single space.

Then again, while holding Australia isn't a particularly big challenge, neither does it provide much worth. Since there's little to no room for expanding outwards, it's absolutely possible to just dump a chunk of forces in siam and more or less block the Aussies from taking part in anything...

Ah yes, Risk. I rarely get to play board games but probably my favorite of the classics.
Also enjoyed playing Ticket to Ride. For those who haven't heard of it its kinda like if Transport Tycoon/OpenTTD was a train board game.

Had fun with Acquire. A couple games turned into slum wars.

I liked Risk. I have owned a couple of board games but I moved last summer, and had to sell them all. :(

I love playing Risk.

I always used to play Narnia Risk until I got the real thing, which was fairly good, but Risk was and is amazing.

I remember when Risk hit Macintosh.
All we did in our HS puter lab was play Risk, to the computer teacher's chagrin.

Not really a cooperative games guy myself, although FF's LOTR card game was pretty good. I'm a big fan of competitive games such as Venetia or The Case of the Catalans (which I am dying to get a chance to play), which is a nice mix of playing together against a common non-player opponant, and having to outplay your "allies".
