Underrated Words

Postby New confederate ramenia » Sun Aug 28, 2016 8:27 pm

What are some words that you really like but other people don't like enough? Post them here!

Some words that I love are:

Odious - I love this one soooooo much! This word has an antiquated feel, but is still suited for modern discussions. As insults go, it isn't too specific or too general, it's just right. Just a few minutes ago I called my sister an odious wretch and it felt so good.

Meme - It's a meme and it has so many different meanings.

a priori - Saying it makes you feel smart because it's a useful latin phrase. It's also really important in philosophy.

What are some underrated words that you guys want to share?

Ruminate - it sounds much better than "think". Think is very dull.

Grievous - I like it because it sounds slightly sinister. I read that certain King's favorite phrase was "grievous wrath". It had been years since I heard. Very underrated

Nor - good short word that saves you typing or writing hassle. I type long sentences as it is, this helps me immensely.

Those are what come to mind personally speaking.

Impracticable. I really miss the way people used to throw it around when I was young.

Oh I'll probably come back here with more.

Coagulate is a pretty good word.

Another one is Equity. Don't usually hear it outside of finances.

Edit: Bong. It's how English people tell time. They put their ears to the ground and listen for how many bongs Big Ben makes. So instead of saying "It's seven o'clock", they would say "Oi it's seven bongs passed!"

Axiom. Something as obvious as the fact that grass is green, or sky being blue.

Defenestrate is one of my favorites, never know when you might need a fancy way to mention something or someone being thrown out of a window :p

Mercurial is another good one, definitely better than "moody," which I think is a boring word that's used way too often.

Douchebag. It just sort of... works.

Yeah, that's a really good one. Gotta love the fact that this language has a word specifically for throwing someone out of a window.

Shadenfreude

It's a German loanword, but just sounds correct for what the word is meant to express.

Or you could be referring to the feeling that you get when someone trips and falls on their face while skanking to The Specials:

Skadenfreude.

"per se". I just love to shatter my nails and shred my tongue with my own teeth whenever I see people spell it as "per say".

Other favourites include "defenestrate" (lovely word) and "transmogrify".

And let's not forget "pedagogy".

And "snafu".

So many words!
