Yeah... because they are
1. often exploited by capitalist countries for cheap products
2. fucked over by those in power (the state is to blame)
3. dictatorships + protectionism = bad time

I think the statism of it is what kills the whole concept, because the interests of the higher class (the state) has a say over the citizens, which isn't really that socialist when one looks at the ideal communist state.
