I don't like them but the threat of human extinction has almost certainly made people think twice about starting massive wars.

I'm divided on them really.

We condemn a terrorist or serial killer for killing less than a hundred people. Why should we condone the mass murder of millions of people through state terrorism? Also fallout can spread through continents and last decades.

They're weapons that can cause the likely extinction of our species if enough were used.

Overall, they're terrible. No civilized nation should ever resort to using them.

For a long term survival of humanity perspective, they're pretty dangerous. While they deter war, they also have a chance of leading to a catastrophic war which would set our development back many years. We've come awfully close to that war several times now.

However, I don't think they should (or will) be eliminated any time soon. The main nuclear powers should continue on the path of arms reduction until each nuclear power only has a minimal credible deterrent. Currently, the size of the Russian and American nuclear stockpiles is mainly driven by a desire to have parity with one another, not minimal credible deterrence. That can and should change. The great powers and the wider international community also have to work together to prevent nuclear proliferation.

The official line is that is for "clearing brush", that is what they told the media I think. If people are hiding in that brush, bad luck for them. It was a big goatfuck about that back in '09 and '04.

Edit: the official line they sold the media. It of course has many other good uses too.

I used to be all for them as a deterrent of traditional warfare.

Then I learned how many times the world was so, so nearly thrown into nuclear war over clouds and computer glitches. Humanity is not prepared for the responsibility. As to how one would go about global nuclear disarmament, haven't the foggiest.

Against what nation has Iran been "aggressive"? The only war it has been involved in since WW2 is when it was attacked by Iraq. Meanwhile, US has attacked Granada, Chagos Islands, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and others, while Israel has attacked Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Get rid of them. Preferably by launching them into space and/or sending them to Venus or some similar planet unfit for human habitation. I'd love seeing what a nuclear reaction does to the place. Plus if we destroy another planet, it'll remind us to never again overestimate destroying our own.
