Gun Laws Megathread [0.1]

Postby Thyvor » Mon Jun 20, 2016 12:06 pm

On the NationStates forums, I see a ton of different people. You get the 'Father Knows Best States' kind of people, who are pro-guns, you get the 'Left Wing Utopia' kind of people, who are normally anti-guns, and you get the 'Inoffensive Centrist Democracy' kind of people, who, in all honesty, from one post, it's kind of hard to tell what kind of stance they have on gun laws. And in spite of all the gun-related threads such as the Orlando nightclub shootings, the 'Dear Mr. President' assault weapon discussions and all the various... well, all the various gun stuff posts, I thought I'd make one general discussion thread.

So what are your thoughts on guns? Should they be outlawed for the safety? Or should they be kept for safety?

I know lots of you have different opinions; my personal opinion is that you should require a strict license after psychological and physical tests which prove that you have the emotional and physical stability to hold a gun and not... well, y'know. I guess we don't joke about that kind of stuff.

Let me know what you think, I'm interested. And please, explain, no answers like, 'yes' or 'ur gay'.

Overturn the NFA, import laws and Hughes Amendment. Dismantle the ATF and roll it into the FBI. Rebuild NICS from the ground up to be more accurate and speedy. Require background checks on all sales including private sales through a publicly available version of said system. Put a greater emphasis on mental healthcare and possibly bring back involuntary committing for those found to be dangerous by qualified professionals.

Mark the IDs of the disqualified, Constitutional Carry nation-wide, Mandatory increase in sentences for crimes involving guns (3x, 4x, whatever it takes) and eliminating plea-bargaining, parole or time off for good behavior for the same.

gun laws

Postby Capitalistfreedom » Mon Jun 20, 2016 12:26 pm

I would support a ban on handguns and military style semi-automatic rifles. Criminal and mental health background checks, licencing for purchase of ordinary hunting rifles and shotguns. There should also be a limit on the number of guns and ammunition, people don't need thousands of bullets and more than a couple of guns. Most mass shooters seem to fit the unemployed, basement dwelling loser stereotype so there should be a minimum net worth requirement of $100,000 to own guns. Switzerland forbids foreigners from certain countries to own guns, this would also be a good idea.

Yay, ANOTHER gun thread. What does this make, 4 active topics with at least a tenuous link to the subject of firearms?

BTW, I'll give you three guesses what my stance on firearms laws are. :D
Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

That is seriously the stupidest thing I've read this week. Why should ONLY rich people be allowed to target shoot, hunt, collect, or defend themselves/others/their property?

I have THOUSANDS of rounds of .22lr, because it's so cheap and easy to shoot, as well as the fact that I own 2 firearms that use it. I also have hundreds of rounds each of 9mm, .45ACP, .223/5.56mm, .308, and 12 gauge.

It's probably because there isn't a replacement for Scalia. I bet they're anticipating a 4-4 decision, which means all the case will do is waste time/money.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're not psychotic(actually psychotic, not just any mental illness), don't have a record of violent crime(actual violent crime, not parking tickets or drug possession), and are over eighteen(substitute in local age of majority as appropriate), buy whatever you want. Carrying should require a license(a shall issue license), and if it's a more powerful weapon- automatics, explosive rounds, >50 cal, etc.- you should be required to get a license just so you can know what you're getting yourself into.
Anything more than that, other than safe storage, is just excessive.

Strengthen the ATF, allow the CDC to study gun-violence, possibly consider lengthening the waiting period.

We definitely need better tracking of gun sales and we need to figure out how to clamp down on straw purchasing. Maybe limit the number of guns that can be bought within a specific period of time.

Well I can't speak for the other states, but we have a waiting period in NC (depending on which county you are in) as far as getting a handgun permit. Considering their involvement in suicide and crime, it might be worth looking into lengthening that time frame.

Ah. In Texas there is no waiting period. Or permit for that matter.

I'm largely satisfied with the gun laws in my state.

Same here.

Edit: With the exception of the fact that we need to get Constitutional Carry passed here.

As you can probably guess, I don't rather mind shall issue myself.

May issue seems a little too capricious for me.

I personally support Constitutional Carry. Shall issue (with nationwide reciprocity) is a good second choice.
