The game makes it difficult to push back the fire, because the trees are too dense for the game mechanics to allow firefighters to get into the woods. So basically, you have to set up a line of firefighters and firetrucks on a dirt trail and hold back the fire's advance while the forest behind the fire eventually burns the trees until the wood won't catch anymore.

Is there a way to clear the vegetation and cut away the fuel? That's generally how fires like those are out out.

I know that, from other campaign missions where doors had to be broken down, that firefighters can be equipped with axes. I was too busy fighting the fire with water, however, that I did not attempt to cut down trees. It may be a mechanic the game will accept.
