Do you run the street, or do you run on trails?
There aren't trails to run on here, so I am on the street here. Even in the mountains, I haven't gotten deep into trail running yet. Hope to do so over the Summer. Plenty of trails around the camp I am working at, just hoping there aren't many bears.

Probably not, you could carry an air horn if your concerned.

Loud noise, as long as not between motber and cub, tbey dont like them. you can get one that velcro's to a belt.
I know loud noise scares them. Now, as for my quick searches just now about flashlights scaring bears, it seems that it is a 50/50 chance as to whether or not it will work.
I am considering getting pepper spray, but am unsure as to whether or not I should. It would definitely work - the police chief in Black Mountain recommended it to all us students - but thinking it may not be okay to have pepper spray at a camp with younger children - even high school age kids - in case they find their way into where I have it hidden.
I think I'm reluctant to get an air horn because I don't know how far the trails take me from the camp and I would have to be running at night when folks are sleeping and I wouldn't want to wake up any of the campers/other staff.

In the event of bear attack, it's ok to wake up the neighbors

An airhorn does also appear to be cheaper than pepper spray - Probably lasts longer too.
Now, as I research this a bit more - it's just like every other way to scare a bear. Some park rangers recommend it, others absolutely hate the idea. Some say it will scare a bear off, others say bears can be hearing deficient or the air horn could work when you need it to, etc. Some say they always carry air horns when hiking, others call them toys and say they would not trust their life to an air horn. Some recommend whistles instead, but I don't know.

Short of a 12 gauge repeating shotgun, there is always going to be some risk. While bears smell is exceptional, their hearing is very good. A whistle you don't have to worry about having air, but a air horn is much louder and sharper.

It's all a matter of cost vs. longevity of the item vs. which one works better.

The other solution is avoiding the woods where the bears would be, but alas I want to be able to run.
if you are going to run and cant run on a beach, the woods are good for you. a lot less wear and tear on the knees and ankles, your not sucking down car exhaust like you are by a road.
