End internet anonymity

Postby American Imperial State » Wed Apr 27, 2016 4:50 pm

You've all seen how some people behave -- trolling, personal insults etc.

What if we ended internet anonymity by requiring each internet customer to have a special ID number sent to everywhere you visit with your name and address?

That way, if you go to a website, you would have to prove your RL identity and have it displayed online. It might cut down on such activities.

Or perhaps a law requiring internet companies to disclose the real life identities of those who abuse their internet access.

This would be catastrophic for those who rely on the internet to talk about activities that are taboo in some in oppressive countries, as well as many political activists,

They might do that anyway. Maybe not an address but a name.

You'd be less likely to be racist online that's for sure

That's adorable.

Once you learn a name, and a general location, it is easy to learn more from there.

It's just a bad idea to end internet anonymity. It's a fast track way to suppress dissent and restrict communications.

Well, lets say an individual on an internet forum insulted my mother or said he hopes I get raped or something crazy like that. I can simply post their poor behavior and find where they work.

Much as I'm agreed that anonymous people online are fucking assholes and scumbag pieces of shit who wouldn't say those sorts of things in person for fear of being hit with a bat...

I think banning it would do far more harm than good. You'd practically make doxxing / releasing personal information even easier than it already is.

So it's just a great way for hackers to get very personal information even more easily because not all sites have the same levels of security, and they can already hack well protected websites easily. Wonderful, with this they'll barely even need to try.

This is more of a case of "I dont like it when someone says something that's opposite to what I think" thinly veiled as concern for people who use anonymity for trolling.
