It would be a high possibility that several southern cities could join forces. The south tends to have a southern unity mindset.

Yeah it's really the only viable plan. I just wanted to point out the fact that it's very hard to ensure your survival in a pandemic.

Waterproof phones and laptops and stuff typically only survive underwater for a few hours. In the middle of a large lake or the ocean, it would take forever to get there. Anyways, things as large as robots typically aren't waterproof.

I could see communities in states joining one another.

No point in trying to recreate a dead nation. I could see communities joining to form boundaries in their own states it would be a lot easier.

Warriors are trained. They had warriors. Also don't compare the hardy barbarians to today's city dwellers.

Warriors are trained.

It wasn't all warriors. At the crossing of the Danube, Peter Heather (one of the foremost historians of the period) estimates that warriors made up, at best, only 20% of the crossers.

This is basically inevitable and why few city states still exist. City states will create alliances, bigger city states will take over smaller surrounding ones. See Ancient Greece.

The military would probably sweep back in and restore order across the country and combine efforts to fix things to be honest.

For me.. Well, just live in my valley for a good while. We live in a rural area small town, so yea.

You left out the three most likely scenarios:

1 - Most likely - Severe impact. The odds of the earth being hit by an object of sufficient size to cause mass extinctions in any ten year period is over 97%. We have been extremely lucky throughout most of mankind's existence on Earth.

2 - Magnetic pole reversal. This has occurred about every 200,000 years. During this time, the earth is completely vulnerable to solar mass ejections. We are over 100,000 years past due.

3 - Distant cosmological event. In the late 1970's, a magnetar event occurred and was recorded by instruments on earth. If the event had been 20 light-years closer, the energy which struck the earth would have ripped the atmosphere from the planet.

The only way to survive any of these is to
1 - not be on the earth at the time
2 - be living in a protected habitat on the earth

Or they can force their way into a a farm (who would stop them) and eat there before moving on, or, better yet, make an agreement with the farmers to harvest the crop in exchange for part of it.

Well, doesn't mean that they wouldn't be 'liberated' by the overwhelming strength of the U.S army, or convinced to join the country of old. So things would prove interesting.
