If a pandemic is severe enough the secession movements may make a full restoration of the U.S impossible.

Well, doesn't mean that they wouldn't be 'liberated' by the overwhelming strength of the U.S army, or convinced to join the country of old. So things would prove interesting.

The thing about pandemics is the probability of desertion by people to go back home, and be with their families or die with them (if they are already dead).

Personally, I'd take the Solar flare scenario because that's the least disastrous of them all. Society unlike a nuclear holocaust or zombie apocalypse has not been completely destroyed yet.

For one, everything on the side of the Earth experiencing daytime would have their electronic devices destroyed. Nighttime side, not so much. If it hit America, it'd basically revert to a third-world country, but Asia would still be perfectly fine.

Also, that's a terrible time to live in. Not only could your nation be invaded, but literally all electronics would be eliminated. Cars? No can do, most modern cars are run by internal computers. Phones? Nope. Internet? Nope. Any form of communication short of smoke signals? Gone. Electricity out. No lights. No food preservation, either, unless you'd like to convert completely to iceboxes. It'd be passable in the daytime, MAYBE, but our world's become too "big" to be effective after a flare. Everyone's too spread apart now. We're dependent on electrical items now.

Solar flare is definitely the LEAST passable option. You go straight to the stone age. No thanks.

I'm not passing judgement for other options, but I just needed to clarify this.

Zombie apocalypse, pandemic, possibly nuclear holocaust, climate change, super volcano, possibly alien/robot invasion, all keep modern technology, to a degree. While in a lot of these, shit's really fucked up and in many cases you're being pursued by some sort of antagonizing being, you can still drive away in a car. While you don't necessarily have to run away from anything, you'll still be running a lot. I feel bad for all the urbanized people who have to take the stairs everywhere and don't have bikes.

I mean, life will probably suck worse in other situations, but effectively solar flare turns into a massive famine (since lots of food will go bad with no preservation techniques available, and it's hard to transport food when you can't drive). Perhaps relief efforts from the fortunate side of the world would help, but the world economy will be decimated, and it's very likely a lot of people will die (especially those living far inland, like mid-US) as they won't be reached in time.
