Freedom of movement is of great benefit to people like university graduates with no particular attachment to the locale they grew up in, as it means they can seek the best opportunities across the EU. This benefit is very visible and understandable to these people.

However, freedom of movement, also allows slumlords to throw up flophouses to accommodate migrants who can afford to work for what would be poverty wages to anyone living in an actual house and supporting a family. Explain why this freedom of movement is of benefit to people born and raised in that town, seeking employment and seeking to raise a family in that town.

It's a difficult proposition to explain to those people why the freedom of movement is a good thing. Because from their perspective, it pushes down wages, makes houses unaffordable to rent or buy, and makes raising a family vastly more difficult.

The Remain campaign did not manage to explain to those people why that situation is better than what the Leave campaign were promising.
