You'd be surprised. With the pill, you have to take it daily, and about the same time each day for maximum effectiveness. Rings can be a "once a month and forget about it" dealie; remember, women stick tampons up in the vagina all the time without any problem; putting it in place might be uncomfortable, but once in place you don't even feel it. Some of the latest IUDs are more "once every five years, with the bonus of possibly eliminating monthly bleeding entirely." That can be a hell of a lot better than "Crap, time for my pill and I still bleed every month."

I'm a firm believer in frank discussion of How The Bits Work. There's this huge taboo about talking about perfectly natural parts and processes, and dancing around it helps no one!

Which, to swing back around toward the topic, is why better access to and information about birth control is a good thing. Even in the most liberal parts of California, our sex ed is often lacking, though at least they don't do the "OMG ABSTINENCE ONLY OMG OMG!" variety.

Vaginas are very elastic, what with that "tiny humans need to get through here" thing. Once you stick something up in there, whether it's a ring or a tampon (or a male during intercourse, for that matter) the muscles of the vaginal wall keep it in there pretty well.

Also, you have NO idea how depressing it is to be posting here and realizing, "Dear gods, people are getting more sex education from me on a PG-13 discussion forum than they're getting from their health classes."

(Then again, my sister and I see pretty much the same thing only involving a room full of 18+ adults, many of which have probably HAD sex at least once whenever we run our "Fanfiction 369: How to Write Sex Scenes" panel at Fanime.)

pro-life and pro-choice BOTH have the stated goal of reducing abortions, but it seems like one side thinks this can be done by making them difficult to get, while the other thinks it is better achieved by reducing the need for them in the first place.

It's not at all clear that liberal access to artificial contraceptives "reduces the need" for elective abortions. In fact, some social scientific researchers suggest that the advent of oral contraception actually increased the abortion rate!

More contraception, the theory goes, increases the amount of extramarital vaginal intercourse. More extramarital sex means more extramarital pregnancies (contraception does, after all, often fail), perhaps offsetting and surpassing the number of pregnancies prevented by contraception's introduction. More out-of-wedlock pregnancies means more abortions. (Unmarried women account for 85% of abortion procedures.)

Whether or not the theory is sound is an open question. All I'm saying is that the effects of contraception on abortion rates have been in dispute for decades, moral and political convictions one way or the other notwithstanding.

It's worth noting that just about everywhere already allows the sale of certain kinds of birth control without any sort of restrictions - the kind that work on men. You can buy condoms with no prescription, no ID, no nothing so long as you can pay. Now to be fair condoms are not drugs, and I don't actually know if one can buy dental dams or diaphragms without a prescription, but I feel like if someone finally invented a male version of the pill it'd be unlikely you'd need a prescription to buy it.

Personally I'm of the opinion that abortions should be a last resort, and that ready access to birth control prevents both abortions and (where abortions are unavailable) infanticide. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Except I'm honestly not 100% sure on the side effects of birth control medication so perhaps it's better dispensed by qualified pharmacists with some knowledge of any potential allergies or health complications you may have? OTOH the store clerk won't ask you if you have a latex allergy before he sells you a box of Trojans (which, given how the Trojan War ended, is a hilariously bad brand name for condoms, don't you think?).

Sounds OK. Provided it's still possible to have the doctor consultation and prescription, and for insurance (or Medicaid) cover the cost, I don't see any harm in adding another option to get the pills.
