No, we don't. I'm a Junior, and the only people who are required to shower every single day are the swimmers and the wrestlers, in an effort to control fungus and skin infection transmissions. Besides, the periods only last for 54 minutes.

I wrestled in high school, and of course I showered. But P.E. in my school was P.E.! We didn't just sit an bullshit for an hour. :p

I don't think I know anyone that did shower after P.E. in high school, it's not like we had time.

Gotta keep those kids busy, so that they don't have the time to think and rebel against the school authorities.

I think my high school started at 7 or 7:30, but then we got out early in the afternoon. I had to get up waaaaayyyy too early in the morning because of the early start time and a long bus ride. I would get up at 6 or so, and it would still be dark outside if it was winter.

I would have to get up at 5 to catch the bus. Living in the country area, the bus has to go down theses mile long roads to pick up one or two kids. We'd get to school at about 7. Classes started at 8.

I did that too and I lived in the city.

Parents didn't have a car and the school bus stop was about a mile and a half away and picked me up at like 6:25. I was a magnet student bussed over to school in a nicer neighborhood, LAUSD seemed to go out of their way to make it more difficult for us. They actually later made my brother's bus so far he would've needed to take a city bus and train to get there.

To this day I don't think 5 or 6 is that early, it's just a normal time to get up for me.

Did you shower in school? If not, why not? I did. Hell, we used to tease the few kids that didn't.

I didn't shower back in high school. The reason was because the showers were not working.

My school had a similar system, though I am not sure if the exact start times of the periods were the same. It has been a while since I was in school.

Also, Aelex, Americans aren't normally in school till 17:00 or 18:00 unless it's a college course. My high school let out at 14:10.

When I was in high school we had class from 0900 till 1600 hours.

Although, mine was known as a "block schedule" school (A and B day classes, and it was split in 4 periods per day, not 7).

Your high school has wrestling? Fascinating. We have separate shower facilities for just swimmers and rugby players. :p

I prefer to just chat up gym, not really a sports guy.

Or sneak out to a local coffee shop.

Ugh, my high school had the craziest weekly schedule ever. Monday was periods 1-2-3-4-5-6 in order. Tuesday was 3 block periods, 3-5-1. Wednesday was also block periods, 2-4-6. Thursday was the "short" day with all six periods, going 4-5-6-1-2-3. Then Friday was all six, going 5-6-1-2-3-4. I mean, in hindsight, it makes sense to rotate the classes so that you weren't half-asleep from the same class ALL the time, but damn it was a pain in the butt to memorize the schedule. Still, like in middle school, we either didn't have showers/time to use them, or they were disconnected/blocked off.

Which really, REALLY sucked in the hotter months, because most of the campus buildings were brick and concrete, and almost none of them had any A/C. People being stinky, teachers and staff included was really just sort of a fact of life there. Though it did mean classes would end early when it was really stupidly hot out, which was nice.

wait a sec, why is gym even a thing?

Can't students just work out in their own homes? Local gyms?

Feels a bit forced

Not all students would exercise voluntarily. Hence why it's forced in schools.

Should be their choice if they want to exercise or not. I mean, it's not like schools can really force you to exercise. It's sort of a bullshit "class".

Scheduling is done by the states and counties, and it can be different from place to place, like I think the school year usually starts earlier in the South. I definitely remember taking a road trip with my family through Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina where I was on summer vacation, but the local schools were all in session and a lot of seasonal family-oriented things were closed for the year or running on shorter hours. We thought it was weird that things were closed, and the local people thought it was weird that I wasn't in school.

But I've never heard of a school district keeping kids in class until 17:00.

I agree.

Classes on specialized topics that develop a set of specific skills would be reasonable (swimming, rock climbing, kayaking for example). But general "PE" classes are of little use and would be better replaced by free time that students could use as they please (library, computer lab, or playing outside/in a gym, etc)

I think some of the people who play sports do, but I certainly don't. I view the showers and the locker rooms as disgusting places in general, so I just put my stuff where I can see it whenever I go to the gym to exercise. The school also has a problem with theft, so I wouldn't feel safe putting them in the lockers there anyways.

Geez, I feel so out of touch for not having a problem with theft in my school at all. I left my gold watch on the football field one time and found it in the school office after school. xD

The locker rooms in my middle and high school tend to have had cockroaches. The showers in my middle school was extra storage for desks or something and were probably infested with cockroaches, though it was closed off and dark so I wouldn't know.

As far as in-school gym class, nobody does. Now, the axe in the locker room is thick enough to decapitate someone, but there's no actual showering.
That's in part to the fact that we only have 5-10 minutes after class to change before going to the next class, but it's not like the teachers can't change that.

Now, outside of school, I certainly shower. And *most* others do to, but there's a few stinkers.

It's not like we do much shower-worthy stuff in gym anyway. We do like 15 minutes of curriculum and screw/stand around for an hour.
