No. Contact is definitely required. You need the stick to make contact with the puck. The skates must make contact with the ice. So yes, contact is actually required.

If we banned everything that was remotely harmful to people/potentially harmful, we'd be banning:

*driving
*all polluting factories
*air planes

*thumbtacks

*fireplaces

Etc. etc. etc.

Boxers know the risk. Nobody makes anyone box. I of course dislike it when anyone is hurt, in any sport, but they know the risks.

its always a balancing act/contextual analysis on a case by case basis based on weighing the social/individual harm against the societal utility

in the case of a car, since it is overwhelmingly the primary and indispensable means of transportation (with essential functions for maintaining the economy etc), the societal utility far outweighs the harm and so regulation is the answer

in the case of boxing, the scales tip overwhelmingly in favour of banning. The harm to the individual and to society far outweighs the entertainment it provides and the unethical profits it provides some individuals with

you do this on a case by case basis, its not all or nothing

If that's one of your major complaints, we should probably be focusing on banning smoking first then, well before anything like boxing.

Or maybe arms sales.

Its all well and good (well not really, but never-mind) having these ideals, but at least focus on the most harmful ones first.

1) Just hockey.
2) Shoot, you shoot the puck into the net. Well, most of the time anyway.
3) How do you think a lot of puck possession is gained?
4) No it isn't. Hockey originates with a bunch of British and Canadians basically taking their ice stick and ball games from Europe and incorporating the holy fuck levels of violence found in lacrosse.

Well statutorilly speaking, there is no legislation that makes boxing illegal in anyway, in the same way that Rugby, American Football, Basketball, and Cricket, all of which have had concussion incidents which have also resulted in at-least one official death. As such, though your wish for human beings to be less violent is "adorable" at best and "laughable" at worst, it is possible for that to occur, however (assuming you reside somewhere in the United States as over 50% of the people here are from that country) considering the fact that there are more gun deaths in the States and practically no legislation has been put into place to combat the threat, you should worry more about some random thug breaking into your house and shooting you/your family dead in the middle of the night as opposed to long term deaths associated with boxing... :geek:

IIRC IM is perfectly fine with people owning weapons for whatever reason they desire.

But hold the phone when it comes to boxing or rugby.

Banning something because it's not good for the consenting participants who know the risks to the activity and go for it anyways is a terrible idea. If something does, as I said, only effect those involved and they all are okay with it, I don't see the issue at all. Whether you want them to or not, they'll do it anyways because they want to, and it's a hell of a lot safer if it's legal. All you'd do is make a bunch of people criminals who don't deserve it.
I'm not actually a communist.

But I can't see why your priorities are on boxing, and not these. Thousands are dying to the other two each year (as opposed to 200 boxers since 1980), and if they are so unethical as you claim, then they should be the focus well before anyone mentions boxing.

One has limited energy, resources and time, and so it should be diverted towards the more seriously harmful practices. The problems of boxing are incredibly minor when viewed in comparison to the world's real issues, and focusing on anything like this is mostly just a distraction from them.
