I did too. Although reports of the world's general distaste for America are greatly exaggerated.

In contrast to the OP's anecdote, the Colomian nationals I've spoken to couldn't care less about US demonyms. One of them even went so far as to call those who get their knickers in a twist over the issue "idiotic".

No there are 2 American continents, as recognized by pretty much every atlas ever. North America, and South America. They are considered SEPARATE continents. To refer to both of them at once its the "Americas."

There is a reason THEY are known as the Americas(plural).

I agree anyone from either continent can be called American.

But someone please link me to an educational site that lists NA and SA as a single continent.

The American seizure of Hawaii was, perhaps, dubious but Hawaii's admission to the Union in 1959 was completely above board. What other states have debatable statuses?

The seven-continent model is usually taught in China, India, the Philippines, parts of Western Europe and most English-speaking countries, including Australia[25] and England[26]
The six-continent combined-America model is used in France and its former colonies, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Latin America,[27] Greece.[19] and some other parts of Europe.
