What's wrong with saying I'm American?

Postby Free Market Paradise » Fri Aug 28, 2015 8:10 am

I was talking with some guy from colombia who went off on me when I said I was an American. He said something like everyone in the Americas is an American. I agreed but then said he wasn't asking what continent I came from but what country. Then I asked how many countries have America in their name. He didn't answer but went on about Americans being arrogant etc.

I thought I had a good point. People don't say they are from a continent. They say they are from a country. My country is America. Is there another country called America?

How many countries have America in their name? I know one.

Latin Americans get hella butthurt over this shit. It's kinda funny when they blow a gasket over something most Americans probably didn't even know was an issue.

no bitch...your American, just because your grandaddy is from (insert here) dosn't make you a part of that people, I have German and Italian ancestery but I would never say I have loyalty or some sense of commitment to these places.

The brazilian left like to call americans that ("Estadunidenses").

Yeah, they hate you that much.

I have no issue with the name, and I would go even further and say Americans should be proud of their country.

United Statesean sounds weird, yeah, but maybe only because we aren't normalised to it and so used to saying "American". I'm not particularly peturbed by this, but I do get that it feels a little weird that you're claiming some ownership or representation of the Americas as a whole.

The United States has a traditional name of Columbia. Its a different spelling, but I wonder what would be Colombia's reaction if the government in the States renamed the country Columbia, and thus called themselves "Columbians" just to spite them. :p

From what I hear, saying, "I'm American," means different things depending on which country from the Americas you're from.
I'm a Christian and a Patriot
“Right is Right even if nobody does it. Wrong is wrong even if everybody is wrong about it.”― G.K. Chesterton

"Better to fight for something than live for nothing." -- George S. Patton Jr.

"Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day." -- Jesus Christ

For: Christianity, America, NATO, EU, Israel, Effective Education Reform, The US Military, Social Capital, and Compromise
Against: Radical fundamentalism, Militant Atheism, Current US Congress, Ignorance, and ISIS (obviously).

Yeah....just like with a merge of North Korea and South Korea, the economy would tank and we'd be left with more issues then we started with.

There's nothing inherently wrong with claiming to be "American" in reference to being a citizen of the United States, I'd just suggest being cautious in throwing that around Latinos since they are really the only people who really could take offense to that claim. All a matter of cultural linguistics really, especially since they are taught from an early age that we're not "Americans" but "United Statsians." Literally everyone else refers to us as just simply "the Americans."

I've encountered that while living in Europe. I ignore it and laugh. I'm American, and Euros say that it's not politically correct, that we should be USians. I say why aren't you still living in the hellish ruins of your wars? Oh yeah, AMERICAN DOLLARS. That usually shuts them up.
