I love how a couple of small-town libraries in Massachusetts got ranked above buildings that actually attract tourists. I mean, they look cool, but I see that kind of architecture all the time, and I don't know why they picked those two libraries out of all the hundreds of Richardsonian Romanesque public buildings that are all over the place.

And why Sever Hall rather than Memorial Hall if we're doing buildings at Harvard? Memorial Hall is way cooler. I took a class in Sever Hall once. It's nice, and it serves its intended purpose, but doesn't stand out from the rest of the architecture at Harvard.

Kind of sidetracked but about cable bridges - Our cable bridge while not has long is nicer looking. Its our islands first and only cable bridge. It opened in 2008 at a cost of $30 million. It has four lanes, two each way. Today, only one lane in each direction is opened since they say the bridge could collapse. Seems in 2009 they found some design flaws but today there is no money really to properly fix these flaws. Around 22.000 autos a day cross this bridge.

Your bridge is a completely different type of bridge; a cable stayed bridge. Golden Gate is a suspension bridge. Personally I find cable stayed bridges to be more futuristic in appearance while suspension bridges are more graceful.

No problem.

For those who do not want to read it, the difference is in how the weight is supported. In the suspension bridge the cable itself is the load bearing aspect of the bridge which means that the cable needs to have a very good anchor (which can be a problem in poor soil conditions). In cable-stay bridges the towers are the main load bearing structure which means that the anchor is not necessary, but the road surface must be significantly stronger to bear the compression loading.

Yes, there are bigger and more impressive bridges now. However, when it was built in the '30s, it was a masterpiece of engineering and synced well with art deco. It still holds a legacy as a historic San Fran landmark. I mean, is the Saint Louis Arch overrated? The Seattle Space Needle? The Nashville Batman Tower?
