I see nobody doing such a thing. Nobody here is saying that Asian Americans are genetically superior. The statistics show that many East Asian people are above average in terms of income and education, and we are discussing what the potential reason for this is.

I see nobody doing such a thing. Nobody here is saying that Asian Americans are genetically superior. The statistics show that many East Asian people are above average in terms of income and education, and we are discussing what the potential reason for this is.

As I stated before but ended up at the bottom of the first page, among other things, Asian Americans are more urbanized.



High average income can be misleading without adjusting for cost of living. Asian Americans are clustered in Honolulu, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City, the most expensive cities in America.

Although city living is as expensive as some make it out to be. You can get things cheap if you know where to look.

Willing migrants tend to be, given enough time and a lack of racism or other handicaps. Pretty much by definition, the people that migrate long distances are among the most confident and outgoing members of the population (moving to the other side of the world is a huge undertaking, and takes some serious confidence). Can be incredibly racist? As someone living in an Asian-majority neighborhood, we often are incredibly racist. Speaking from my perspective as a Filipino, all races are considered garbage except for white people - who we look up to (hence the obsession with skin-whitening in the Philippines and the need to not appear poor regardless of financial status, because that is "not white"). Not that we would marry white people - that's still disgraceful - but as far as business partners and friends go, white people or Filipinos (and maybe Chinese people... maybe). Everyone else is spat upon behind their backs.

Of course, in public and toward others, we're very polite.

I live in the San Gabriel Valley; a region renown for the Asian American population. Many of the more affluent communities here (Rosemead, San Marino, Arcadia) have a large Chinese American population. Yes they do live in a suburb of Los Angeles, which creates a higher cost of living and thus higher salary. At the same time however these Chinese enclaves are significantly more wealthy than nearby areas (Baldwin Park, El Monte). Have any of you noticed a similar occurrence in your cities? Or is this just limited to Southern California?

It's not hate. Hate is a... strong word. It's more like contempt.

In all seriousness, though, if you think Asians are successful because of some inborn genetic trait, you're idiotic. Asians are perceived as successful due to the wealth of historic Asian migrants (many who come here are already wealthy, thus dragging up the averages to mask those who come here as poorer immigrants) as well as the fact that Asian culture is not very accepting of failure.

There's a reason the suicide rate in Japan and South Korea is so high. In the Philippines it's a little better because work is hard to find so people understand when you have a crappy job, but there's still a lot of pressure put on kids to achieve and people are not above throwing others out of the family to ensure that their name is preserved.

We don't hate sai yan (as mother says), it's just that we never forgot the Opium wars, or thousands of years of Chinese history and culture. Which, I remind you, is pretty much simplified into: You are all barbarians! Great Han master race! to all non-han peoples. I guess this attitude has never been erased, especially after the Opium wars.

@Grey Wolf. You are mostly correct. We can have extremely high social expectations. Some stereotypes are real. (But that doesn't mean that they apply to all families).

Anyhow, east-asians (mostly referring to Hong Kongolese) tend to be the richest in the area I live in, although of course, there are considerable amounts of jews, and white people living in the Canadian mcmansions. They make their money in mainland China, and then move here to live. We then take their money and pour it into social services.

It's all cultural. Everything is cultural pretty much- and good parenting. I suppose in Canada, there isn't as much racism, but people still hold stereotypical viewpoints. MUST GET THE 99 100. Type of mentality- except I think that now, many of the parents have adapted to "being well rounded" in uni-acceptance and start enrolling children in more than just piano and swimming. Although from my experience, having asian peers (and a lot of them, with the same ethnicity) also deeply rub off on you- too much competition. My peers expect more than their parents of themselves, anyhow. Mostly because of cultural stigmas- I think their tactics have changed into subtle manipulation.

No it happens in Vancouver and Toronto up here as well. I am more familiar with Toronto, being a Torontonian.

One of the reasons is that rich Chinese are coming here, since social services and government are better. If they come for education, is only for the english.

I live in an semi-asian majority neighbourhood (chinese suburbia) and we like to have nicer homes... because nice homes are nice.
