Both, as in the robot and the car? I'm not sure you've looked into the situation. The robot was made out of household items, and had barely any capabilities, save for it's minor ability to talk, and some added lighting features to show a bit of emotion.

So destroying a robot is worse than destroying a car simply because said robot's designers intended it to vaguely resemble a human? That makes no sense. Besides, most cars these days look like faces (to a degree) from the front.

Oh yea. Totally. This conclusion can totally be reached because one robot got smashed.

Only in America.

I believe you are missing the purpose. You are saying that every piece of machinery (from computerized cars, to bucket chested social experiment "robots") are equal in importance and value. The hitchBOT was given the qualities, personality, and other human-like aspects of the human race. It was designed specifically, for a social experiment, where it would measure certain trust/interactions between robot and human, and other similar aspects of basic human social engagements.

This robot was given a life, unlike a car;

I am hitchBOT — a robot from Port Credit, Ontario. My guardians are Dr. David Smith (McMaster University), and Dr. Frauke Zeller (Ryerson University). Growing up, I was surrounded by bright, intelligent, and supportive people who I am proud to call my family. I have one sibling, kulturBOT, who travels from one art gallery to the next, tweeting photos of the artwork and of the venues. kulturBOT is definitely not as good-looking or well-rounded as I am.

As a robot, I enjoy listening to electronic music. I currently have Mr. Roboto on repeat but the Blueman Group and Kraftwerk are also amazing. I also enjoy reading a lot of books, especially about philosophy and astrophysics – I guess that is what happens when a robot is influenced by both the sciences and humanities.

Simply put, I am a free-spirited robot who wants to explore the world and meet new friends along the way. I am an avid instagrammer and tweeter. On my downtime, I can appreciate a good game of trivia and would never pass up any opportunities to bake desserts.

Yes, which is why this isn't a bigger deal. But it's intriguing that someone would smash something that was intentionally designed to be personable and human. It's like if Harry Potter came to life as a robot and was murdered in some back alley, and then his head was sent to JK Rowling.

You are completely disregarding the circumstances. It was a social experiment, not just "some piece of property", I don't know how I can explain it any more simply to you.

Yes, we are all pursuing legal action against these people and the FBI will be breaking down their doors any day now. They will soon be put on trial for first-degree murder.
