It was amusing to watch it unfold as I, like most sane people, have unsubbed from most of the default subs and the ones I still enjoy are not ones I browse too often.

It did raise some interesting points about the disconnect between moderator and admin on one of the world's largest websites - how shit and uncaring must you be that people are actually shutting down the website to get their point across? I'm glad that doesn't happen here. People just throw spamtrums instead.

We're also a fraction of Reddit's size and activity, and not armed with the sort of tools that would allow us to quickly or easily go all Madagascar on the site and Shut. Down. EVERYTHING!

I mean, I could potentially seriously fuck up the forums, but I damn well know better. (Besides, Max knows where I live! ) Also helps that [v] is in pretty constant contact with the mod team, so I don't see a situation with such a massive disconnect arising here.

There's a difference between hacking, password cracking, and DDOS attacks. To the best of my knowledge, the site has never actually been hacked, though there was that glitch that risked potentially exposing a little data, but it was fixed quickly and everybody informed. Password cracking isn't hacking, it's simply guessing or phishing passwords out of people. DDOS attacks aren't hacking either, that literally amounts to using a script to essentially hit F5 in a bajillion browser tabs at once to overwhelm the server's ability to respond.

Besides, everybody knows that our greatest opponent ever was a rogue moose.

do you mean when a bunch of people made a secondary forum? because there are two major incidents that fostered it and neither of them were minor. there have been a few shitstorms though so it's hard to tell which you are referring to.

I have no idea, sorry. I think it's that one. I come and go in drifts and waves every few months or so. This time I'm trying to stay. If we are thinking about the same thing, it's probably fair to call it minor in the sense that this Reddit debacle is 'major'.
What were the two causes, incidentally? Was one something about the mods looking into telegrams? If so, that's the very same.

im going to spoiler this because i feel weird talking about it and bringing it up now

the first was mods going through moderation candidates TGs with a fine comb without telling them before they even know it happened or that they are candidates, which is yeah probably the same thing we're thinking of. i can't remember how it ended though. the second was discontent with the mishandling of a report about a poster pretty much doing everything short of posting "i rape children" to let people know that if he had not already done so he would very much like to go to thailand where their laws are not bound by petty western morality. it all got mostly sorted out in the end but for a while it was understandably a source of intermittent problems. but i don't want to end up sparking it off again.
