Bonus points for blaming proto-psychiatrists for killing George Washington. There was a great video from crash course noting how no one would dare make fun of a polio victim, yet they seem to have a free for all when it comes to the mentally ill.

Well yes there is the small minority that pretends to have a mental illness, but mental illness is just as real as regular illness.

Also, why is abstract thinking a symptom of altimeters disease?

I don't remember ever saying that they weren't.

I've suffered from severe bouts of depression, well for a long time now. Might be partially genetic, most likely just the kind of early life I had. Resulted in, to date my first and only, serious suicide attempt almost two months ago. Currently being treated for my severe depression since I'm still in a bout. May not seem like it, but I jack myself up with tons of caffeine nearly everyday so that I can 'act' more 'normal'.

My dad's side has a history of mental illness. I know for a fact he's struggled with bipolar disorder for decades. He's got help and medicine, and he's been stable for as long as I can remember, so it's not a huge familial problem. I was lucky (heh) enough to inherit a couple of illnesses, at the moment, the official diagnoses is depression and suicidal ideations most likely caused by social anxiety with bipolar 2 as a possibility. I had a couple of samples taken and sent in to better understand my metabolism's response to medicines, the first couple of which I showed a fairly high sensitivity to. The next time I'm in, I could be prescribed any number of medication I previously had no idea existed, some of which are antipsychotics. So, hooray for me?

Had pretty severe depression and anxiety my entire life. Anxiety is getting better, but the rare panic attack is pretty shitty.

Tend to cope with both through excessive alcohol consumption.

I used to have insomnia and depression but with the help of friends (and other things) I got better, if everyone just reached out to a random person on the street that seemed like they were having trouble it would be a much better world.

It would, but unfortunately we're stuck with a mentality that a lot of people have that if they go to others for help or are offered help from others that it'll only make things worse.

My depression doesn't get better, as I try to die everyday, I try to get help but it never works for me. I'll always have a fake smile, then cry every time I'm alone. Basically all my disorders rule my life, they've broken me.

Do you know how absolutely important it is to synergize the paradigms in a corporation. If you do not, my god, the world might explode or something.

In all seriousness, while I have never been diagnosed with clinical depression nor experienced it, I have noted that people being excessively "look on the bright side of life" and so on when I am most obviously not tends not to end well, and most often with me being far far more sad than before because where is this "bright side of life they speak of, eh?

Well maybe if you know what's the cause of the problem you should confront it head on, it's what works for me but maybe not you.

That's how I kinda dealt with it, although drinking occasionally to deal with problems doesn't seem all that bad.

But drinking every time you feel bad, leading to drinking excessively every day, even when you have to work the next day, and drinking all day on days off, developing into full-on physical addiction, is kind of bad.

Yeah I guess, but the occasional drink to steady your nerves or deal with someone can't be that bad for you.

My issue is that I can't have "the occasional drink." I start and don't stop until I run out or pass out.
