War sounds like an adventure to discover the world and rife with opportunities for true heroism and good combat.
Some people (the real life Jaime Lannisters) live to fight and have adventures.
Also, not everyone who participates in wars get scarred or dislike the experience. Some like it so much they continue to fight as part of mercenary units in conflict-ridden parts of the world long after the main war is over.
