I'm not joking, I always thought Rhode Island was part of another state, or was in fact Canada. I suppose I could use the fact that I'm Australian (and therefore knowing about other countries' subnational jurisdictions isn't relevant to me) as an excuse, but I'm also a huge geography nerd.....

Yeah, I didn't know that Rhode Island was a state either. *shrugs*
But I mean, I wouldn't expect non-Canadians to know that Prince Edward Island is a province, either, so I guess it goes both ways.

I kind of want to do a social experiment, kind of like the reverse of "Americans know nothing about the rest of the world" stereotypes. Like, I think it'd be hilarious to see a French person try to name and locate all 50 states.

Well, that's the thing, I knew Prince Edward Island was a province. I've looked at maps of the US and Canada and (at least attempted to) memorise the states/provinces/territories. I know that sounds kinda sad, but I just really like knowing where things are, and given the amount of US films and tv that have saturated the Anglophone world, there is some merit to the notion that non-Americans know a disproportionately large amount of US geography.
My parents are UK immigrants, and so I know loads about Uk geogrpaphy, because whenever they told me about something that happened in their lives in the UK I'd always ask "where is that" when I was a kid, plus I watch loads of UK tv and like I said, I really like knowing where things are.

Shit, there's no way I could manage that. I barely know which states are directly south of me.East Gondwana wrote:Well, that's the thing, I knew Prince Edward Island was a province. Well, I guess that, seeing as Canada only has 13 provinces and territories while the US has 50 states, it might be easier to memorise the Canadian ones than the American ones. I don't know.
Anyway, we should probably start steering conversation back to LGBT+ rights and issues, before we get accused of threadjacking. I'm not completely familiar with the American political system; can people in the US write to the people in government about things? Like, could one write to the NC gov't about their new anti-LGBT stuff?

Yes. We yanks can bug the shit out of our governments. It's part of the 1st amendment in the US Constitution.

I feel you should be aware that we have a delightful town in North Queensland called Yorkey's Knob. I have no idea who Yorkey was, but apparently his knob was sufficiently wondrous to warrant naming a beachside town after it.
More in keeping with the thread topic, we have a Mount Buggery in Victoria, and a Jimcumbilly in NSW.

There's a Perth suburb called Cockburn, but it's and English name, so as usual it's not pronounced how it's spelled - it's pronounced "COH-burn"
