I guess they think it's 1816, not 2016.

But I mean, I wouldn't expect non-Canadians to know that Prince Edward Island is a province, either, so I guess it goes both ways.
I kind of want to do a social experiment, kind of like the reverse of "Americans know nothing about the rest of the world" stereotypes. Like, I think it'd be hilarious to see a French person try to name and locate all 50 states.

2016 really is turning out to be a sucky year for the LGBT community...

Not just straight allies. Many LGBT+ rights organizations disbanded as soon as SCOTUS ruled for marriage equality, and some of those that remain don't have much of a history of showing enthusiasm for anything other than marriage equality.

The anti-LGBT crowd has reorganized using "religious liberty" as an excuse. They realized that they couldn't stop marriage and so they looked for a new strategy.

That too. They lost the battle for marriage equality because a growing majority of the population, and the political system, rejected their rhetoric. When it comes to anti-discrimination legislation, and specially protections for trans people, they face a less numerous and solidified opposition, and enough ignorance on gender identity issues to make their case more compelling to large amounts of people.

There's also the "bathroom rape" fearmongering.

Which is made effective by the fact that far too many people don't quite understand trans issues, and culture still has a lot of catching up to do. It's pretty much Anita Bryant all over again: in the name of "protecting children from predators in public spaces", a sexual minority (that a large segment of the population doesn't understand) is vilified, and has its human rights violated. Back then, it was homosexuals in schools. Now, it's transgender people in public restrooms.
