Good. That heretic deserves a good smacking. I'll be able to repay him for his assault of Arius.

Isn't his Santa?

St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in Lycia (southern Asia Minor, present-day Turkey) in the early 4th century. Click here for a detailed account of his life.

And yes, he is the origin of the Santa Claus legend, but in a very distant way (the modern concept of "Santa Claus" is a legend that arose in the German-speaking parts of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, loosely based on some aspects from the life of St. Nicholas, 1400 years earlier).

But I mentioned him right now because of his famous reaction to Arius at the Council of Nicaea (and by extension his reaction to the Arian claim that Jesus is not divine).

Uh... wait, what? Huh? :eyebrow: I never heard of such a thing. Obviously Santa Claus is a legend that doesn't have much to do with Christianity, but that doesn't make it "evil".

Well, Christians contend that the focus on Santa Claus during Christmas is diverting the attention to Jesus Christ.
Christmas is supposed to be about Jesus, not Santa. Just saying. :)

Well that's complaining about commercialization. Not that Saint Nick is evil. They make the same complaints about Easter.

That's a different point than Santa Claus being "evil".

They just think that Santa Claus is less important, or even fictional, and thus that we should not be celebrating Christmas the way people in the West do where the focus is Santa, but rather make our focus on Jesus' birth.

Well, when you take the "n" out of Santa and put it on the end what do you get? ;P

Anyway, on a more serious note, the modern idea of Santa is pretty far from the actual Saint Nicholas. I usually think of them as two different figures, really.

Well, that's what Christians think. They believe Satan supported the existence of Santa Claus to divert attention away from the celebration of Jesus Christ, hence Santa sounding similar to Satan.
