Doesn't the US also have the most apathetic voters compared to other Western Democracies? I think I remember it being like ~35% of eligible people actually vote(except during Presidential elections which have a slightly higher turn-out).

We would have a higher percentage if state officials did not actively discourage voting by certain groups. In 2000, station wagons in Florida carrying blacks to the polls were pulled over and fined for operating as taxicabs without a license. Schenectady NY has no polling places within walking distance of Vail or Hall, its two poor neighborhoods. They are supposed to go downtown, to City Hall. Why so few sites? Oh, think a bit; I'm sure a possibility might occur to you.
So, the parents have to find a pay a babysitter and take the bus (few bus stops in those neighborhoods too), If they can get time off work. If their work shift runs to 7 PM they might make it to the polls in time to find it locked in their faces. I like to say we modernized democracy, but just forgot to update it.

I live in Britain and people always say that America 'has no culture' or 'has no history', but to be quite honest America is far more in touch with it's traditions than anyone in Britain. Americans for example, actually celebrate the fourth of July. I enjoy being in the States on the fourth of July because I find the genuine expression of patriotism and national feeling to be quite touching, not to mention exotic since it is entirely absent from modern Britain. The UK has a longer and richer history and culture to celebrate, yet it doesn't. The great figures of American history like the founding fathers, Lincoln and Davis and so on are still remembered to this day, revered and celebrated. The countless heroes of British history have been recast as evil imperialist oppressors and consigned to shame, ignominy, and obscurity.

Maybe because they usually are, in fact, evil imperialist oppressors.

The ones that weren't oppressive, like Wilberforce or Attlee or even Churchill (no matter how much I dislike the man for his imperialism, he did do a good one with punching Hitler in the nuts), haven't been consigned to shame and ignominy. Maybe there's a reason.

It's pretty shocking to me how terrible voting apparently is in parts of the USA. In Canada, there are polling places pretty frequently in cities (schools, churches, community centres and even the lobbies of larger apartment buildings will often have them), but representatives for different parties will drive people to polling stations if you ask them to (even if you're not going to vote for them). In addition, your employer is legally required to give you a certain number of consecutive hours off work on election day so you can go vote. I've never heard of people waiting all day (or even lines that go out of a building) in Canada. Oh, plus you can always register to vote at the polling station. Even if you don't have identification, a neighbour can vouch for you.

Granted, I don't have much of an idea of what it's like in rural areas (I still think that polling stations are required to exist every so often, but I don't know how close they end up being to each other).

Apparently In-n-Out burger has a veggie burger that isn't really a burger so much as it is a vegetable sandwich (seriously, they sell you burger fixins between some bread and call it a veggie burger). There's already at least one online petition asking them to include a real veggie burger on their menu.
