I agree. British English can be considered "standard" English because the UK is where the language first developed. As settlers moved to the Americas, Africa, and Australia, the local pronunciations and accents change.

That sounds quite literally death-defying to engorge.

Not that I don't believe you, but could you provide some source to corroborate this?

At least know the words you're gonna use if you're gonna use 'em.
One example is at my school. Once the bell rings, the speaker turns on to say the pledge. The students will almost simultaneously stand up and say the pledge. So, they are conditionalized by the bell. Similar to Pavlov's dog experiments.

Ha! You ain't seen nothing yet! Allow me to regale you with the tale of the KFC Double Down: it was a bacon cheeseburger, but instead of hamburger buns, it had fried chicken breasts and gravy instead of mustard. And then there's the Heart Attack Grille..... Good lord the Heart Attack Grille. People have died there.

Skip to like minute 12-13. There was a time in England when it Americans actually held the posh and proper linguistic stereotype, whom "spoke English better than the English themselves."
Bear in mind though, that in the 19th century the dialects on either side of the channel were still markedly distinct from the stereotypical dialects of today.
