What are some strange American customs?

Postby Sheltton » Tue Feb 17, 2015 10:14 pm

This question is for ones who are not from the U.S. and think some of the ways of American life is strange. To me it's our passion for American football (although i live in the south :P).

Write a longer OP or the moderators will lock the thread.

For me your rampant nationalism is both bizarre and bothersome. I am a nationalist and I am proud of my country{ies} but you guys push it too far.

I am from the US as well. One thing that I cannot understand is why we still teach and use the Imperial system of measurement. Nearly every other country in the world uses metric, and this is obviously because it is more efficient and easier to use.

I'll have to ask for examples. We no doubt have a fair share of nationalists, but you should also realize withdrawing from laces like Iraq happen because popular support condemns it.

A Basque criticizing another country's excess nationalism is literally the most ironic thing I've seen, read, or heard about today.

Upon entering an American airport, it is considered humorous to yell "aloha snackbar." An inside joke regarding the food and drink restrictions recently put in place in the States.

Americans really love it when you do this, and will instantly warm up to you.

If it wasn't English, you wouldn't understand what OP said.

It's the dialectical nuance; what Americans speak is not standard English.

There are several different dialects of English, such as British English, American English, South African English, Australian English, Irish English, and many more. American English is not a "corrupted" version of British English, rather a dialect that developed over time. There are different dialects of German, and Germans living in Hamburg will not call Swiss German "corrupted" dialects. :palm:

I suppose. Did the American founders speak the English of King George?

What do you mean "of King George"?

They could have held a complex discussion with him in English for certain.
