I had at least four family members fight for the Confederates during the war and I have no shame for that

My family fought for both sides. It was the worst war in American history. National fratricide is very shameful.

My family were farming potatoes in virtual slavery in Ireland... I don't have very favorable views on those who exploit others for their labor.

Stars and Stripes forever! Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin did not struggle to see their beloved nation torn apart by traitorous Southerners, Copperheads, and various other forms of treasonous scum. Even though I think Robert E. Lee was a swell guy, and certain Union lads were deplorable assholes, the traitors were undoubtedly in the wrong. My only sorrow about the Civil War is that Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson, a Southerner and a Democrat, let the South get off easily after the war.

I by no means agree with slavery, however, the Union and Lincoln are unjustly romanticized in history as some sort of righteous defenders of "freedom". Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was nothing more than propaganda to rouse the Union into a spirit of war, and appeal to its liberal sentiments.

I've been anti-Confederate for a while.

Within the far-right community, I've taken some heat for being such an ardent supporter of the Union, and if necessary, I will argue how the Confederacy was a net harm for American whites, and had it been allowed to win, the result would have been disastrous for both sides.

I'm also an American nationalist, which means I support the political unity of the American nation, and I will fight those who wish to divide it for the sake of using enslaved labor, which would have enriched themselves and hurt their fellow Americans.

Contrary to what many white nationalists say, the Confederate government was incredibly anti-white, often screwing over the common people out of work and wealth by using slaves (which was a crime in its own right). Meanwhile, the glorious Union government was clearing a frontier for our posterity.

You are an American, and being a rich asshole from South Carolina doesn't change that. I wish Andrew Jackson brutally crushed them during Nullification, preventing the Civil War entirely.

So yeah, we will live and die together in the Army of the Free.

I guess we can start fighting again, then.

The Union used slavery as an excuse, undeniably. For example, the Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in territories recaptured by the Union Armies. The border states still had slavery under the Union's rule. It was merely not-so-honest Abe playing political games and taking advantage of the public sentiment.

I actually have (Very Few) surviving letters from my family at that time. In the 1860s, most of my family were native to South Carolina. been there since before the Revolution. Farmers, and judging from the letters and what other information I had gathered somewhat well off. They were not poor, but they were not Plantation Barons either.

The general attitude of the letters from a Nathaniel W. and his several cousins and brothers were that they desired to defend their homes and family. Slavery was hardly mentioned at all. Most signed up after the attack on Fort Sumter from the dates. I feel like that is the largest reason why most southerners fought. They were defending the lands they grew up upon, and had no inclination to either fight against it or sit idle while (Who they considered) foreign armies ravaged it.

The Civil War was certainly about slavery. That's been established in the historical record through statements by the Confederate leaders and in the founding documents of the Confederacy. They absolutely believed that LIncoln would seek to end the practice, and darted out of the Union before he took office.

However, there's no evidence that Lincoln was inclined to make any drastic moves regarding slavery, at least at the beginning of the war. It was only after a couple of years that Lincoln saw the conflict in terms of a moral crusade, as we see it framed in his Second Inaugural Address. Essentially, due to the South's loss of dominance in Congress, they feared losing their "way of life", and foolishly started a war rather than finding a peaceful resolution to their concerns.

I just went to the Carolinas I think in North Carolina it was I saw it I was interested in the topic at the time and thought it looked cool and got it.
