Man at Walmart attacked for carrying gun with permit

Postby Nuwe Suid Afrika » Wed Jan 21, 2015 7:12 pm

Source: http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafe ... or/2214432

tampabay.com wrote:BRANDON — Clarence Daniels had just crossed the threshold of Walmart's front doors on Tuesday, in search of coffee creamer for his wife, when the gun in hip holster gave a well-intentioned vigilante the idea he was up to something more sinister.

From the Walmart parking lot at 11110 Causeway Boulevard, Michael Foster, 43, of Lithia had watched Daniels, 62, take from his car the handgun — for which he holds a concealed carry permit — and place it on his hip underneath his coat, Hillsborough sheriff's deputies reported.

As Daniels entered the store, a label for the coffee creamer in his pocket in case he forgot the brand, Foster tackled him to the ground and placed him in a choke hold, sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon said.

"He's got a gun!" deputies said Foster shouted.

"I have a permit!" Daniels yelled back multiple times, McKinnon said.

The men struggled and were separated until law enforcement arrived on scene just before noon. Foster was arrested and charged with battery.

"Unfortunately he tackled a guy that was a law-abiding citizen," McKinnon said. "We understand it's alarming for people to see other people with guns, but Florida has a large population of concealed weapons permit holders."

The Sheriff's Office recommends that vigilante-inclined citizens refrain from taking matters into their own hands, especially when an incident is gun-related. Call 911 or alert security, McKinnon said, before taking any drastic measure.

"You better make sure there's a good reason," he added. "Otherwise you might be confronting a guy that is legally permitted to carry a gun."

There's obviously going to be some controversy on gun regulation, but I think its honestly nothing more than an over-paranoid weirdo freaking out and trying to keep himself and the others in the Walmart safe. I'm not saying that he didn't do anything wrong, I'm just saying that it was a misunderstanding.

The fact that he had the gun was not the problem. The man who tackled him was the problem. So no, we don't need gun control. In the case that just happened, it was the people saying gun control is good that were causing more problems than the people saying gun control is bad that weren't causing problems.

What's your opinion on the issue, Nationstates?

I'd probably leave a store or not go in it if I thought someone had a gun, legal or not. So I understand why they were alarmed, although I would've just informed the store or police, not put him in a chokehold. :p

(but seriously, why do you need to bring a gun to walmart?)

I'd be more inclined to tackle the tackler. Honestly, somebody who carry/conceals as opposed to a deranged homicidal maniac displays much different behavior than asking for coffee creamer. Thank goodness this imbecile wasn't carrying, or else we'd probably see the poor man gunned down like an animal. Strange that somebody who took the time to get a CC license wouldn't also get a real holster.

Simple solution, don't let people carry guns, unless they're doing it for some special purposes (police, military, or if hunting in the wilderness)

Problem solved, now let your Congress know I've solved one of their country's most controversial issues, simply by using my brain.

Walmart is huge. You can't really know if some one has a gun or not, and it's really inconvenient to wait an hour or two if you knew anyways.

Some neighborhoods are really shitty.

News reaches here quite slowly, no?

People are stupid. Don't assault people who aren't doing anything. Simple.

If a man walks into Walmart with a firearm, holstered or not, I am leaving the store and taking my business elsewhere. Owninga firearm for personal defense whilst you transport, are on your own property or another's property is one thing, but when you bring a weapon with which you could kill me in seconds, solely designed for killing, I would leave. Especially with the recent spat of shootings by loons.

Have you seen those checkout lines?

Seriously, there's no way to know when you might need to defend yourself. It could be anywhere, and it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

I think it is pretty obvious that Foster committed a crime and should be punished. If someone else is not committing a crime or competing against you in a sport involving tackling, then there is no right to tackle them.

It is fine to have a gun. What is not fine is to go into a public grocery like this Walmart, waving it around. People are bringing rifles to coffee shops,it's getting out of control.

That is obviously NOT a solution to violent crime given the fact that violent criminals existed for so long before firearms

The gun carrier must be punished.

Medal of Honor for his assailant. He obviously had a damn good reason for tackling this man.

Why would anybody be carrying a gun into Walmart? Only to shoot people down, of course.
