I wouldn't. Given how many flights pass through the area everyday (Singapore is a major aviation hub in the SEA region), you'll be safe. Who are you flying with anyway?

Headquartered there anyway. As a publicly listed company, no-one in particular "owns" it.

The Tan Sri Fernandez listed here as a major shareholder is the guy who bought Airasia from the Malaysian government in 2001. For one Ringgit, which is less than a dollar!

AirAsia Flight 8501 Lost, 162 Missing

Postby The United Remnants of America » Sun Dec 28, 2014 7:57 pm

An AirAsia Indonesia airliner flying from Indonesia to Singapore with 162 people on board has gone missing.

Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control at 06:24 local time (23:24 GMT Saturday) over the Java Sea.

The plane, an Airbus A320-200, disappeared midway into the flight of more than two hours from the city of Surabaya. No distress call was made.

Bad weather was reported in the area, and an air search operation has now been suspended for the night.

Planes from Indonesia and Singapore had been scouring an area of sea between Kalimantan (Borneo) and Java. Some boats were reported to be continuing to search as night fell.

AirAsia Chief Executive Tony Fernandes: "We are devastated by what's happened"

No wreckage has been found, an Indonesian official told the BBC.

AirAsia's Chief Executive Tony Fernandes, who has flown to Surabaya, said: "We don't want to speculate but right now of course the plane has been missing for 12 hours and there's a deep sense of depression here.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-30614627

So, has anyone picked this up yet? It's running on all the major news spots and is being printed online today.

This has been a pretty hard year so far aircraft, with so many being shot down or lost at sea. Are there any ideas or conspiracies as to what's happened to 8501 as opposed to Malaysia Flight 370?

One plane was shot down that I know of this year and two have been lost.

I doubt there's any "conspiracy" here. The world can just sometimes be a dangerous place. It is a little weird that two planes have disappeared somewhere over the seas in Asia in the same year but I'm betting it's just coincidence.

Your source, sir:
CNN wrote:(CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 9:57 p.m. ET Sunday, 9:57 a.m. ET Monday in Indonesia]

Indonesia's top rescue official says authorities believe the missing AirAsia jet is likely at the bottom of the sea, based on radar data from the plane's last contact. "(Because) the coordinate that was given to us and the evolution from the calculation point of the flight track is at sea, our early conjecture is that the plane is in the bottom of the sea," said Marsdya Tni Hendry Bambang, head of Indonesia's national search and rescue agency.

There wasn't a distress signal sent so whatever happened either was not picked up on like the pilots or happened quickly enough that the pilots had no time to react.

They may have been too busy doing the driving to talk on the radio. There's a few catch-phrases in aviation that doing the driving comes before talking to the folks on the ground: "Aviate, navigate, communicate" and "An airplane flies because of a principle discovered by Bernoulli, not Marconi.".

Two fatal hull losses, but those were a long time ago (1990 and 1992). So yeah, a very safe airline.

Most of their business is domestic, so I guess they're not well known. But according to IATA theyre the fifth biggest carrier in the world.

As to the North Korea incident earlier this year, North Korea should count themselves lucky they didn't accidentally hit the plane!

Aviators were the nerds of their day. When planes were flown by waggling a stick held between the legs, they decided to call that a "joystick".

Jeez Malaysia, your airlines are having absolutely no luck this year.

Australia is offering help for the search effort.

My guess is that the two are connected but not that way. The pilot wanted to climb over the storm, but the storm got them before they could. Modern planes are quite resistant to lightning, so more likely an updraft or big air pocket broke it up.

We'll know fairly soon. Unlike MH 370 there isn't much doubt about where the plane went. It went down.

Another one? I think this is Arceus' way of telling Asia they shouldn't fly.

Eh, flying from Indonesia to Singapore, mostly likely the plane crashed. I doubt it mysteriously "went of course", considering how close the two countries are to each other.

Maybe hit the storm panicked and tried to climb a little faster. OR came close to stalling and pushed the nose down into the storm caught a nasty down draft.

The possibilities are endless.

It was a very reasonable assumption that it went down soon after signing off with Kuala Lumpur ... not six hours later in the south of the Indian ocean. You may remember they kept searching the South China Sea for days. (Actually, the Malaysian military was pretty sure it wasn't there, but in the Andaman sea or beyond ... but their failure to intercept or even contact it was embarrassing so they just let searchers continue to risk their lives for no reason.)

That one freak event doesn't establish a new pattern. Plane goes off radar as it's encountering a storm cell, the most likely explanation is that it crashed nearby.
