Your Favorite Modern Day Political Leader(s)

Postby Fortschritte » Sat Dec 06, 2014 1:29 pm

Hello, NSG! Certain political leaders from the past are often admired by many, and considered to be role models, and in some cases, heroes. However, political leaders and politicans are generally distrusted and disliked nowadays, which has inspired me to create this thread. I'm curious to hear what modern day political leaders NS'ers admire/like the most. Now, when I say modern day, I'm referring to current leaders. And, when I say political leaders, I'm not strictly referring to heads of state. Political leaders can be any politicans with some degree of name recognition and importance. Of course, it can also refer to heads of government. So, what politicans and political leaders of the present do you favor the most, NSG?

Personally, there are three people that I can name off the top of my head.

(1. Helen Zille of South Africa, for her tireless efforts in fighting corruption and poverty. She's fought tirelessly against poverty, discrimination, and corruption that plague her country, and her tenure as Mayor of Cape Town and Premier of the Western Cape has been very impressive.

(2. Michelle Bachelet of Chile. As President of Chile, she has fought hard to reduce income inequality, improve LGBT rights, increase access to contraceptives and birth control, and provide more affordable healthcare and education.

(3. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. As a US Senator, he has taken strong stances against lobbying, corruption, and income inequality. He has been outspoken in his support of LGBT rights, universal healthcare, environmental sustainability, and economic justice. And, his voting record certainly shows this.

I think Merkel is good.

I think that the Vermont senator would be the only thing close to a favorite US politician.

Despite our ideological differences, I think Merkel is an alright chancellor. She's been fairly successful in getting Germany through a recession, and has proven to be pragmatic, moderate, and mild mannered. She's a hell of a lot better than her predecessor, Gerhard Schröder.

I can't say I've heard of the former.

As for Udall, why did you choose him?

Just remember the ideology of my nation state is not my IRL ideology. My nationstate has pretty much become a parody of itself.

I think Merkel is what Harper would look like if he was not so into oil. And if he was more sane.

-President Jose Mujica of Uruguay, for his humility and support for civil rights.
-Governor Brian Sandoval of the State of Nevada for willing to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act despite his party's position.

Well, I'm liberal scum. :p His support of conservation and renewable energy and the fact that he was willing to stand with Wyden (though I may vehemently disagree with his gun control support) make him one of the more tolerable candidates.

I almost put Jose Mujica as one of my top three. But, I figured I'd throw in someone from America instead.

As for Sandoval, I don't mind the guy, but don't like him either. He's just a governor who did a few good things that really shouldn't be newsworthy.

He's definitely a great guy. I feel like the name Jose Mujica will become very hackneyed in this thread. :p

When it comes to American politics, there are many offices across the nation.

Technically members of the judiciary aren't political in nature, but I do have admiration for both Ruth Ginsburg and Clarence Thomas. Yes, they represent opposite methods of legal interpretation (I am inclined to agree more with Ginsburg) but are both very principled and dedicated leaders.

Now that she raised interest rates, cut funding for BNDES and appointed some dude who's literally from the University of Chicago to the Ministry of Finance, maybe.

I'm a big fan of Bernie Sanders, Ron Paul, Anthony Weiner, Elizabeth Warren, and Gary Johnson.

They're not perfect, but I feel like they're honest for the most part and actually have people's best interest at heart even if they don't necessarily see eye to eye on how to do it. And all of them have ideas and views that I respect and tend to draw ideas into my own pool of political/moral philosophy.

Justin Amash, for being the only no nonsense Republican that wasn't exactly a neocon sell out or koch shill.
-Mike Gravel, democrat from New Hampshire that later joined the Libertarians. Was quite an intelligent fellow and fought against the draft during the Vietnam War.
-Tim Moen, leader of the Libertarian Party of Canada, who wants gay couples to defend their marijuana plants with semi-automatic guns.

Angela Merkel, no doubt. Her pragmatism, cautious, compromising demeanor is what made Germany that respectable, stable country.
