Iran is actually significantly better than Saudi Arabia. Hell, Iran used to be a pleasant place back in the day, when it was the Kingdom of Persia.

Kingdom of Persia is what ignorant Westerners called it. It was legally the Islamic State of Iran, and Iran is what the people living there have called the country for centuries.
And the Imperial State was not a pleasant place for anyone. There was a reason why SAVAK was condemned as one of the worst human rights abusers on planet earth, and that's because Reza Pahlavi exercised a one-man autocracy that trampled over all fundamental liberties. This is ultimately why he was overthrown.

2.) I do have my doubts about the fairness of the trial, in particular because the fellow stabbed held an intel post in a country.
3.) The articles mention that he was stabbed in the back multiple times, after allegedly drugging her. The fact that he was stabbed in the back might have something to do with why her claim of self-defense did not get accepted by the court (much as defendants in the US claiming self-defense have had a harder job if they shot someone multiple times in the back). See again #1.
Good points, if she was drugged, how could she have been able to attack him, unless maybe she drew a knife and he tried to run so she fell on him. Or maybe someone else killed him and tried to place the blame on her
