How would you explain Nation States to your parent/guardian?

I use it to write interesting things about running a futuristic quasi-authoritarian government. That's how I always explain it. My mom always wants to see some of the things I write, but considering the violence, liberal torture sequences and the barely PG-13 eroticism (sometimes homosexual in nature, and I already have to convince her I'm not "totally" gay once every week), I'm always just like "eh...some other time. You'd find it boring."
