Many people usually anchor onto an ideology during late teenagehood or early adulthood.

Remember the last time America tried to annex a country? Look up the 'War of 1812'.

Not the last time. remember the Mexican-American War? Where we annexed the Republic of Texas, and Mexico's remaining northern territories. oh, or the Spanish American War? loved that. learned in school that we annexed PR and the Philippines, and tried to control Cuba in a way similar to how the soviets controlled their satellite states around them.

A few problems:

1) Texas chose to annex itself to the US because of its unsustainable debt. That wasn't a conquest, it was an agreement which in the short run actually was significantly damaging to the United States economically, though in the long run has turned out to be a good thing.

2) Puerto Rico is far better off as a part of the US than independent. The majority of the population is quite happy as an American territory, and they benefit from it enormously. If anything, the US would do well to rid itself of PR, since they're a significant economic drain.

3) The annexation of the Philippines wasn't as cut and dry as you may be led to believe by your socialist teachers. We didn't want to annex the Philippines, in fact the only reason it was taken at all was because Theodore Roosevelt had fantasies of an American Empire and using the area as a coaling station and hub for trade in East Asia. We essentially took the Philippines because we gained them in a war which happened by accident (Attacking the Philippines was under Roosevelt's orders which he was technically not legally allowed to give, but it couldn't be undone after initiated), then didn't quite know what to do with them when we got them. It seems we were bogged down by the Aguinaldo insurgency because the McKinley administration wasn't quite sure how to handle it, since there was no concept of giving them independence, but we never really wanted them either. We eventually held on to them as a bulwark against the increasingly aggressive and expansionist Japanese.

But no, apparently, it is some teen who thinks that he is all strong and powerful when in reality, he has no solid ground. NSG ain't a place where you are likely to change the world: you are more likely to alienate most of us with neocolonialism than persuade us to accept neocolonialism because you believe Liberians can't run themselves.

So as a fellow teen (17 at that), let me say, you are very idealistic. Heck, I am a bit idealistic sometimes, but unlike you, I am not that idealistic. The only territorial changes I want to see is the possible annexation of St. Pierre and Miquelon, Alaska, and maybe Greenland into the Dominion of Canada, and I support those that involve referenda (i.e. I recognize the results of the Crimean and Scottish referenda). The people of both sides need to make the decision, not one person.

If you really want to help, go there, learn from the people about what their problems are and what they want, and help them to ensure they can acquire and maintain what they desire independently rather than being lorded over by some "civilized man" operating on the white man's burden.
