What do Athiests stand to gain from disproving God?

I was recently looking at the Does a Christian God Exist? thread and while arguing, this thought came too mind.

From my point of view (admittedly Catholic), atheists trying to disprove God are trying to rid the world of someone (who may or may not exist) that leads an organisation that goes into the world spreading a message of love to the world and helps the poor by feeding and educating them. By disproving God it also seems that atheists are trying to get rid of something that answers life's tough questions and unites many people under that belief.

I may not be able to see it from an atheist viewpoint so that is why I'm asking you NSG,

A few points:

- The classic neckbeard response, which is actually true from a philosophical standing, is that atheists are not trying to "disprove" God because it is impossible to prove a negative.

- "Atheist" is not capitalized unless used at the beginning of a sentence.

- Religious organizations do much good, that is correct. But they also do much harm, such as discriminating against homosexuals or hiding scandalous preachers. Religion can be a force for good but it is not inherently so.

- Reason dictates that evidence must be provided for something to be considered factual. While all the religious have their rights, atheists are entirely reasonable to oppose religion when it attempts to influence schools or public legislature.

- There is much to gain from removing religion from the state.

Religion has no reason to recognize the state since the latter is illegitimate. The government, and religion have to atleast be secular for the sake of the equality of all.

I usually don't bring the topic up. When I end up arguing about god, it's usually because I've been arguing with someone about a different topic, and they make an appeal to their religion. I'm not really trying to gain anything - someone has simply said something I disagree with and I'm going to argue with them over it. It'd be the same if you told me the sky is red.
