If the US just annexed the rest of the Americas this problem would go away and nobody that matters would be hurt. *Nods*

But really, I'm not sure that anybody has ever REALLY had confusion over Americans from the US vs South/Central Americans, given that context will give it away.

EDIT: Somebody already made that joke, apparently. Dirty mind-reading joke-stealing ninjas took my totally original and edgy joke.

The United States of Columbia!

Columbia was a common nickname for the US during our early history, and is still retained by the nation's capital (District of Columbia).

But really, this is a non-issue. It hurts when people insult Americans based on the name we have adopted. It may not be 100 percent accurate, but that's the way history went and no one is hurt. I wish people could stop arguing over this and love each other.

No....they did not. Some of them (like Alexander Hamilton) wanted to gain more land and be interventionist but none of them wanted to control of the Americas. You'd find that founders like Adams and Jefferson would be opposed to that. Especially Washington.

So what about areas like where I live, where there are almost no WASPs, being populated mainly by Germans and the Irish with some Polish thrown into the mix?? Do we become our own independent nation of Germanic Gaels via secession when the WASPs take over??

What? By now, most Europeans here have integrated into the (WASP) Yankee or Dixie culture. Also, a bonus; if you're a European from the North whose family has been in the US since before 1920, you most likely have colonial blood. That wasn't however the point of my post, I was making a joke because Hurd used WASP as an insult.

Heh. We must be the exception here!! I think where I live its gone the other way, with the WASPs being brought into German and Irish cultures XD

Hell, I know Anglos who celebrate Saint Nick's Day, which has been popularized by the Germans here (which we celebrate in ADDITION to Christmas). Plus EVERYONE goes to Irish Fest 'round here. Doesn't matter if you aren't actually Irish, you go out and celebrate being Irish!!

Ahhh. So the city I live in is the last bastion of Non-Anglo Saxon culture in America I guess??

Not really needed as American refers to the US in most cases. However, for the sake of argument, we could name the US as Columbusians. Just because it's fun.

As has been said, Columbia is the really logical choice, but won't work because we already have a Colombia. Yankeeland is also a strong option, but, (as has been said) wouldn't be accepted because within the United States, Yankee means northerner. The only other option I can think of off the top of my head that would be historically fitting would be to use some derivative of "patriot," Patria perhaps.
Of course, that has it's own weaknesses because patriot has since taken on another connotation of "heroic nationalist" (which might be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective,) and is not internationally used to refer to Americans.
Of course, we could always reclaim "gringo."

I think a better idea would be to stop meddling in the middle east and conquer our upstart neighbors.

I don't get it. WHY Columbia?? Columbus "discovered" an ISLAND in the New World not even near the United States. If we're going to be that loose with naming the place, why not Ericsonia, after Leif Ericson who also discovered a New World Island that wasn't even near the US. Plus Ericsonia's not taken, and sounds cooler because Vikings.
