In homage to my home state of "The California Republic" I would rename it "The Columbia Republic". Another alternative would be to dame it "The Federation of Yankees, Dixies, and Texans" or "The United Federation of Yankeeland and Dixieland". What? By now, most Europeans here have integrated into the (WASP) Yankee or Dixie culture. Also, a bonus; if you're a European from the North whose family has been in the US since before 1920, you most likely have colonial blood. That wasn't however the point of my post, I was making a joke because Hurd used WASP as an insult.

Calling citizens or residents of the United States of America as "Americans" has often caused a little confusion because of other nations that exist in the North and South American continents. For example, a nation in Europe would not refer to themselves as European in a nationally exclusive demonym as people in the USA do with American.

So lets say the country will want to rename itself to give people a new name. "United Statian" isn't gonna work.

I think renaming the country Yankeeland would be an interesting altrrnative. Americans are often referred as Yankee or Yank overseas so it could work. However the majority of the South would object to be under such a name so it could be a problem. Another alternative name could be Washingtonia to honor George Washington, 1st President.
So what do you think the USA should be called after all this time? If it should stay the same, explain why.

The only nation in either North or South America that uses "American" as its demonym is the United States. There really is no confusion. I can't really see why this would be happening, even as a hypothetical, so I have no alternates to your two less than satisfactory options.

Sometimes American is used to refer to people of the North and South American Continent. This seems fairly rare as there normally smaller regional and national demonyms to use. And where it is used it is normally clear from context.
