Where were you when Pluto died?

Postby The Sotoan Union » Tue Sep 16, 2014 6:05 am

As we all know, Pluto is not a planet. The decades spent learning about the ninth planet was all a lie. My Very Energetic Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas was no longer a handy moniker for remembering the order of the planets.

The ISU decided that there were three classifications that needed to be met in order for something to be a planet. Pluto did not meet them all, so it was considered a dwarf planet. Some people say that dwarf planets are planets, but if all dwarf planets were considered planets then the solar system would have more than 50 planets.

In the end there was considerable outrage. But what do you think NSG? What was and is your personal opinion on the matter. Do you agree with their ruling? Will Pluto always remain a planet in your eyes?

I used to reject the idea of Pluto as a dwarf planet. Then I realized that it is not, in fact, a planet.

Pluto will always be considered a planet in my eyes. I had grown up with nine planets in the solar system, so I'll die believing there are nine and not eight.

Just see it's size, a planet being smaller than a dwarf planet, are you kidding me people, yes Pluto must be considered as a dwarf planet.

If the people who decide what counts as a planet say that it's not a planet then that's good enough for me.

When I was young (like 5 and somewhere around 7 years old), Pluto was actually one of my favorite planets. When it was declared a dwarf planet, I couldn't stop calling it a planet until I turned 13. Sadly I don't really care much and agree that it is a dwarf planet (but I'm still interested on what the New Horizons will see on Pluto when it flies by in July 2015)

kind of pointless in my eyes that they reclassified Pluto after decades, it was known long enough that he was too strange to fit with the term "Planet"; so what took them so long?!

It can't e described as a planet as it is small than one dwarf planet, that dwarf planet may be considered a planet better.

Eris should be considered a planet as it is bigger than Pluto.

Obviously they can't be wrong with their own classification systems.

Pluto is a planet. The new definition is rather silly.....an object exactly identical to Pluto, located in an identical orbit around an identical star, would be a planet so long as that start is not the Sun.

I'd propose ONE set of definitions for use in all the universe, rather than using different definitions for different systems.

Someone else can come up with names, I don't really care on that standpoint, but to categorize sub-star objects based on two factors

1) hydrostatic equilibrium or not
2) primary body, first-order orbiting body, second-order orbiting body, etc

Those could be combined into one longer list of names or done as two-part names

Well, since it is an opinion based issue, they would be considered wrong by anyone with a different opinion.

When I learnt of the planets, Pluto was numero 9. So that's how it'll be in my mind.
