No, I think that people are just starting to care less about stuff that isn't effecting them directly.

It's much easier to be polite and respectful when you can tolerate others' lifestyle choices or existence.

I think people are becoming less violent because there are more resources to go around, so it's easier to get what you need without fighting. We've gotten much better at producing enough food for everyone.

Since it's now illegal for soldiers to just take women as trophies and haul them back to their country, I'm inclined to believe that war has gotten more civil.

Might I also add that the percentage of the human population that has actually died in conflict has increasingly lowered.

You can't make a war civil. The two are mutually exclusive. Wars are never civil- they are always violent.

Too many people are bitching about the way people are behaving today. Do you realize how much nicer everyone is than they were at most points of history? Sure, in some places(like in Serbia) standards have fallen somewhat and people tend to act like assholes. But overall the world is doing just fine.

On a personal note, I would say people are becoming meaner. I have faced more abuse from random strangers in the last few years than in the decades before.

On a world note, I think that what seems to be humanity getting nicer is actually more that power is being consolidated into fewer and fewer hands, so national cruelty is going down and local cruelty is being jacked up to keep people broken down.

SCOTUS is dismantling civil rights.

Police are armed with military weapons, and use them indiscriminately.

America has more people in jail than any other country.

I cannot think of any group of leaders in any category who are respected.

There has been a shift in values in the western world towards a sort of "civil rights culture" due to the increased education of the general public. There's also been a shift away from militarism in response to the World Wars and the development of weapons of mass destruction. I don't know if you could say individuals are getting nicer, but our broader culture is certainly getting more humanistic.

The whole globalised, inter-connected capitalist economy helped quite a bit, too.

As well as the development of superpowers to the degree they're at, the reaction of the western world to the World Wars and the development of WMDs.

Valentir wrote:No, most people aren't nice, and that is a good thing. Nice guys finish last.

The world would be a worse place if people were nicer.

I don't think most people realize that "nice guys finish last" is an innuendo.

I always feel I am becoming nicer and social, and people around me seem to be becoming shut-ins.
