The Cold War, Version 2?

Postby Vekalse » Fri Sep 05, 2014 5:39 pm

Following recent events in the world, it appears that the United States and Russia, are, once again, fighting indirectly. Of course, it seems that this is small--it doesn't appear to be Arms Race, to be honest. This time, it seems like a land crawl. The only difference--Russia is taking (Or "regaining" based on your political views) land, and the United States is influencing land. It seems that the United States for even more influence in Western Europe, while Russia is regaining its land, prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union. They've already clashed in this decade, already, but eventually, the two forces will have to meet. It might be another "Iron Curtain," or it could be simple, and one of the countries will pull out of the "Crawl." The United States has, once again, been working at its economy. The United States is now more financially safe, and is moving onto other problems. Russia, however, only seems to be isolating its citizens, and building up a military which was already powerful. The United States is not the only guilty of spreading influence, as Russia has seemed to improve its grip on the Middle East, and much of Eastern Europe. However, Russia has seemed to have lost a lot of relation with China, a nation that would side with Russia, anyway. China and Russia have a common enemy--The United States--but their relations have been on a slow decline. Of course, tension between China and Russia is heavy, as well. Russia has become aware of its "Ally" to the south, and is becoming distant from China. It is no doubt that border-friction is part of this slow decline. Israel has also taken a major part inside this "Second Cold War." It--and somewhat Saudi Arabia--is the United States' only access to the Middle East, for Iraq has become unstable. Is it possible that four nations are taking part in one Cold War? I assume, yes. Tension building up since the collapse of the Soviet Union are almost at the spilling point--A.K.A, World War Three. When we speak of another Cold War, we have to include a lot of nations. I have narrowed down a list of the top players, and have noticed a trend.

(My opinion, feel free to create your own.)

"Frontal Tributes"

United States, Russia, China, Iran.

"Secondary Tributes"

Israel, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Korea.

"Third Party Tributes"

France, The UK, Italy, India, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Canada, Japan.

"Important Figures"

Oman, Yemen, Iraq, Vietnam, Algeria, Turkey, Ukraine, Georgia, Poland, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.

Anyway, to get to the point--What do you think, NS? Are we entering another Cold War?

Please keep the discussion on topic, and make no insult to ethnicity, ideology, etc.

I don't think that this conflict really is a "Cold War" per se, but it is just the increase of tensions everywhere around the world due to feedback from the World Wars and the Cold War.

What I mean is, the US has been a world power since WWI and the (pretty much) sole world power since the collapse of the soviet union.
Now, after the financial crisis, the country is not as strong as it once was, as well, it is pulling out of certain countries.

To continue, ever since the British and French Mandates over the middle east, the countries created bring together cultures and sects of religions that do not necessarily work well together. Tensions boil and hence the Arab spring. Now, Russia and the US are allies with different parts of this area, and are bumping heads on what to do.

Finally, with the whole Ukraine thing... I have no idea what the hell Putin was thinking, but again, it created more tension between itself and USA.

I am not sure if I would call this a Cold War, but maybe a precursor to a much larger conflict. I do however find that Putin wants it to be a cold war, claiming "Global Nuclear Power" in a way, not seen even during the Cold War.

I wouldn't call it another Cold War, but Putin may be trying to start something. He's flaunted Russia's status as a nuclear power, claimed that he could take Kiev in 2 weeks, and even called the collapse of the Soviet Union the worst political event of the 20th century.

No this will all blow over. Simply having a country that can compete with the US doesn't mean cold war. History is full of superpowers competing against each other. The idea of only having one is actually unusual.

That said we may never be buddies with Russia, but that doesn't mean our relations will be comparable to when we almost blew each other up.

Personally, I think that we are entering a mini-version of the Cold War. Russia doesn't seem to be dying off anytime soon.

If we are, Russia's going to lose bad. They haven't any steady allies, and their sphere of influence is much reduced from their heyday.

I agree with that, completely. Their allies are not firmly grasped, and seem to be there, only because they feel threatened.

I don't think we're headed into a new Cold War, Putin will realize soon enough that he can't pull it off.

Lol. I have to disagree with that, though. The Soviet Union collapsed, ending the Cold War, in my opinion.

same as in mine. And to regress, this new thing is not the second cold war, but a precursor to something larger. The larger thing might be a power shift, or war or something else. But whatever happens will have a huge future impact.

Not really. The Russians are still our primary military rivals. The nuclear arms race hasn't ended, both the Russians and America are working on modernizing their nuclear arsenals, we are still engaged in proxy wars with them, still getting into stand offs with them. The Cold War wasn't anything special, its just the way major powers act towards each other, the only difference is that the prospect of nuclear war has meant the likely hood of direct conflict is greatly reduced.

Some of my favourite films take place during the Cold War, so I completely approve of a second one.

How has it ended? We were closer to all out war with the Russians in 1999 than we had been since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Cold War was a conflict between the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact and the United States/NATO. The Soviet Union collapsed, the Warsaw Pact no longer exists, and the Cold War ended.

The United States/European Union should be more open to cooperation and diplomacy, instead of sanctions and the like. Even if Putin is unwilling, at least we will have tried to do the right thing.
