So Stephen King should have been taken into custody as he was teaching in a school and writing Carrie?

Carrie was written before Columbine, but I think if it was written today they should have done some sort of investigation, even though the fantasy element in that story is much greater than the one in the OP.

The novel by the author in this story takes place 900 years in the future. Unless you've read the book , you have no idea how realistic or unrealistic it is.

Yes. An inevitable slippery slope from the events of one paranoid school district. Or you know. A gross exaggeration.

It probably won't be the last time we've heard of overly paranoid school districts... Columbine sort of did this.

I can see why they looked into it, but I think they overreacted.
The Serene and Glorious Reich of Nazi Flower Power has existed for longer than Nazi Germany! Thank you to all the brave men and women of the Allied forces who made this possible!

I remember hearing about a teacher who was so disturbed by the bullying that went on in his school that he used it as inspiration for his first novel, a story about a young woman who is so horribly scarred by her dysfunctional home and school life that when she's the victim of a cruel prank at a school function, her response is to kill off a good part of the student body. Alarming, right?

The book was Carrie. The author was Stephen King. As far as I know, none of his students died at his hands.

Strangely enough my first thought was wow Stephen King should be on death row.

This is stoopid, especially coming so soon after the report about the kid arrested for a similar story. Good that the United Police States is again exposed...

That is the danger. If we ban children from reading about killing people with guns, they will read about killing people with magic powers. And when we ban stories about magic, kids will read about Jedi powers because Jedis aren't magic because? because?

Making the Prequels proves that Lucas is an evil tyrant, so he WON'T overthrow tyranny.

Ugh. The same thing happens to students, and it's insane. My best friend wrote a story in high school in which one of the characters committed suicide: and they suspended her.

What was the reasoning for the suspension? Do they think a suspension would prevent a possible suicide?

This could be good for this author in the long run. Plenty of publicity. You know what they say about there being no such thing as bad publicity.

They considered her a bad influence on other students. Like she was going to convince other people to commit suicide. Because that's totally how that works.
Besides which, it was a work of fiction. That's a hell of an assumption to make. As if nobody could have any other reason to mention suicide in a piece of writing.

Welcome to the culture of fear. Thank you so much mass media.

I've seen so many people here on this very board who seem to revel in living in fear, so no surprise that people would react in hysteria over this.

That doesn't make it right, just expected.

Science fiction can't be realistically carried out with current technology. That's kind of the point.

I feel like something might be missing from this story...back in a mo'.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

This isn't police stateism.
This is the frankly pathetic extreme of overreacting to school shootings.

Violent fiction is completely intolerable in US schools now.

Ya gotta be careful what you right. School stories should be happy stories. If you write anything remotely violent it should be something clearly fantasy, like with wizards and knights. Even then the violence level should be kept at a Disney movie level.

I'd probably have been shot by police as a precaution if I'd written the stories I wrote at school today in the states.
