Friendly statue in a quirky community or evil sign?

Postby Civilana » Sat Aug 30, 2014 4:12 pm

I don't know if this has been discussed or not, but there is a statue in the quirky and fun community of Fremont, Seattle. It isn't like a huge thing or what, but it's a statue of Vladimir Lenin. Yeah. Wikipedia URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Lenin,_Seattle. The story behind it is that when Czechoslovakia toppled its Commie regime, in the Czech village of Poprad, they put their Lenin statue in the dump. While an American was ravaging the scrapyard, he found this bronze mammoth. He bought it and sent it to the USA. While figuring what to do with it, he died in an accident. So his family put it up on a street facing a Masonic lodge and a FedEx shipping center. I'd love to hear your ideas.

Much OP. Very wow. I don't suppose you have an opinion? :eyebrow:

Also, this thing is old news, and I drive past it when we go to this really good bakery near there. It's not an "evil sign". It's just a kind of funny souvenir someone decided to put up. It's not like anyone minds.

The man behind the Red Terror does not deserve a statue like this.

This is why America is so great, you are allowed to have statues like that without any repercussions.

Well, no one's ever asked for it to be taken down.

And if someone did, no one would listen. It's like the troll under the Aurora Bridge. It's not nearly as big a symbol of Seattle, but still, everyone here knows about it and kinda thinks it's just a funny thing we've got. It's been up for a long time, I guarantee you no one will be taking it down any time soon.

Edit: also, OP, do you have an opinion? Like, at all?

It's a piece of Soviet art history. Why not keep it? It's not as though it's harming anyone to keep a statue around.

Eh, Lenin had some vaguely good points.
Statues should be allowed unless there's a significant number of locals who want it down.

I know. It's just a statue. America's got some (microscopic) repercussions for it, but still, the Seattle people dress it in drag, string it with Christmas lights, or make it into a clown.

Doesn't exactly seem like much of a noteworthy topic or a bother, and unless a significant number of Seattle residents want it to be removed, it shall stay. I think a very good argument to be made for it staying in existence would be found in the First Amendment.

I feel like it would be better suited to a museum, but it doesn't really matter.

What in the hell is wrong with Seattle??? Really, they put up a statue of a violent revolutionist that hated capitalism with a burning passion. Why is Seattle even part of America, they clearly don't like America so why don't they just succeed. America is better off without those idiots and they can live on their own without these Americans that they hate so much.

And while we have a statue of Lenin, why not have a statue of Hitler or Castro?
